So here is a young guy (24) with smoke/and/or tear gas, a rifle, a ballistic vest, a handgun, and a knife. Walks in the side door of a movie theatre after midnight and shoots/kills at least a dozen people.

Seems like every armed citizens' worst nightmare. Also -- if the guy turns out to have a CCW and to have purchased the firearms legally -- a real headache for law-abiding gun owners everywhere.

So, on to tactics.

Seems like a head shot would be a must here to end things quickly... pelvic shots might put him down and immobilize him for other options (including then fleeing with the rest and letting law enforcement mop him up.)

But.. in a darkened movie theatre? With chaos and crowds fleeing around you? Could/would anyone here take/make that shot?

Or would you join in the mass exodus toward the exits?

One thread on this incident has already been closed. You would think there is something High Road worthy that we can learn and discuss from this incident.

As long as we are open for discussion, my thoughts so far are;

Carry as often as possible.

Carry spare ammo.

In most cases, don't follow the crowd.

When entering any venue, identify possible escape routes.

Listen to the evolving details and learn from them.

Think through scenarios like these in advance and mentally rehearse possible responses.

Engage family members in discussion and planning so they have some idea of what to do and what they should expect you to do.

Those are the thoughts I keep having.

I didn't see the closed thread, so I will leave this to the moderator's discretion.

Of course it goes without saying this is an enormous tragedy.

Head shot may be quite optimistic in such a scenario but i'm wondering if one would even be able to tell the guy had armor. Obviously the distance in a theater can vary greatly. A problem with returning fire in this scenario is there are people scrambling every which way so one runs the risk of shooting an innocent but as we saw if one doesn't act many more will surely be killed. Hitting the deck between the seats seems like a much better option than joining in the crowd running for the door.
