Australian gun laws

The gun laws instituted in 1996 along with the buyback set something like 5 categories of firearms, standardized registration and licensing across the country.

The buyback is estimated to have taken in no more than 1/3 of the targeted firearms (semi auto and pump action). I would think it is safe to assume that criminals who participated in the buyback cashed in on junkers. I would also think it is safe to assume that the 2/3 remaining in circulation probably include functional firearms owned by criminals.

Then there are estimates that around 2012 there were up to 6 million illegal (unregistered, unlicensed or banned categories) firearms still in circulation.

And then the Australian Institute of Criminology reported that the overwhelming number of firearms crimes were committed with unregistered firearms or firearms not owned by the criminal. Whoa, imagine that.

So despite the PM's posturing for political points they know the whole schemozle is a failure and they still have a problem with criminals not observing the laws. Fortunately for them, the rate of firearms use even by criminals is low.

The Victorian press and all other states run a campaign of lies and misinformation about the shooting sports in this Country ( Australia ), what pisses me off is the media have a bad habit of going to anti Gun groups and asking their advice and the crap that gets printed staggers me, The Prime Minister John Howard ( who hates guns and publicly said so ) who implemented the buyback in the 90s is still seen waffling on, spewing his anti gun crap still at gatherings in Australia, and even worse doing the same in the US. This Country is about to have the National Firearms Agreement, this is a group of politicians & Police making decisions about mine and other licensed firearm owners pastime, talking to a rep from the SSAA ( Sporting Shooters Association of Australia ) our version of the NRA, that no representative from ANY shooting group will be allowed in, its done behind closed doors, and all the SSAA and other groups could do was send in submissions, you can only guess the underhanded deals done behind those closed doors.
