Tragic. Officers will look after there own but this was most likely a good shoot and an ending that no one wanted. Terrible for the officer that had to shoot.

Authorities: Police shoot off-duty deputy, wouldn't drop gun

Police shot and killed an off-duty deputy celebrating his birthday after the man drew his gun, became agitated and refused commands to drop the weapon

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Police shot and killed an off-duty sheriff's deputy celebrating his birthday with friends after the man drew his gun, became agitated and refused commands to drop the weapon, authorities said Wednesday.

Hamilton County Deputy Daniel Hendrix had just turned 26 on Tuesday and was celebrating with two female off-duty officers with the Chattanooga Police Department, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.

Witnesses, the statement said, reported that Hendrix would not drop his weapon, as commanded by one of the officers. The situation "further escalated and resulted in one of the two responding officers firing his service weapon at least four times, striking Hendrix," the release said.

I've always taken to understand that, when a cop tells you to drop your weapon, what they mean is drop your weapon. Doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure that out.

More than likely there are more details than just "an on duty cop showed up and shot an off duty cop who became agitated". Sad state of affairs for sure.

And I'm really sick of every news agency out there mentioning the race of peoples involved of every news worthy event. They act as if their trying to "get to the bottom" of racism but the constant mention of race in the news I feel is racist in itself.

I won't be surprised if the autopsy shows drugs in his system. Very sad.

As a retired cop I fully grasp the " DROP YOUR GUN " call.

And as much as I would not like to actually DROP a loaded gun [ especially my own ] if COMMANDED to do so = I will comply.

It was either suicide by cop,or a person abusing a substance [ or both ].

I feel most sorry for those that fired, and had to either know or learn that they shot a brother.

I must have missed that part.

It did say the dead fellow was white but said the police declined to identify the shooters race.

If the deceased were black and they declined to identify the shooters race, you wouldn't be reading about it here, rather watching it on CNN, MSNBC, etc.

I was always told there are two acceptable answers to an officers question, one was "yes sir" the other "no sir". When they tell you to do something, repeat their command back to them in confirmation as to your next action(s) then do it slowly. Not too complicated and I have yet to be shot by one.

The article says he threatened the women. He didn't drop his gun. Laying it on the ground would have satisfied the command. I don't feel sorry for the guy who was shot. I have sympathy for the officer that did the shooting.

I was a LEO for over 30 years. Most of that in a plain clothes job. I was a firearms and tactics instructor for most of that time. I told my people if uniforms arrive on the scene and don't know who you are they are in charge until you get things sorted out.

Sounds fishy to me. He was partying at his own home with 2 female officers. He pulled out his gun for reasons unknown and threatened the women, they safely got out of the home and he was shot in his own backyard? I think there's much more to the story here. And if the deceased tests positive for drugs, I think the 2 female officers should probably have a "random" drug test as well.

Hopefully alcohol wasn't involved. It's amazing how much booze can remove someone's ability to think clearly and utilize good judgement.
