Automatic weapons ownership

Drop in auto sears and lightning links have been going for over 10k. I seriously doubt these guys are selling legal AR's with DIAS, for oly 5k.

I've always been amazed by the punishments for certain kinds of firearms.

If you step over the line from a semi-automatic AR to a full-automatic AR you face 10 years in prison.

If you sneak into a National Park and poach a big game animal you get a maximum of six months.:scrutiny:

Or have a barrel or stock that's 1/8" too short. The regs are unconstitutional, everybody knows it, but the NFA community is too small to get things made right.

Do criminals with illegal MGs or SBS/SBRs get hit with the punishments as much as otherwise squeaky clean law-abiding citizens? I don't remember hearing about 10 years and a quarter mill. tacked on to sentences for the few cases where an illegal MG was used (for example the N. Hollywood guys, if they had lived, would have 30 years and $750,000 tacked on for their 3 MGs).

The even scarier part is, you would be going to jail for tax evasion.

Thats it.

The ATF/FBI/Military raided the Koresh compound and killed nearly everyone over their suspicions that they hadn't paid $200 in taxes. Thats it. Nothing else. Over $200. They killed Randy Weaver's wife. They spent over $1 MILLION in surveillance. All because they accused Weaver of not paying $200 in taxes. When is the last time you owed the Government $200? Would you think it would be reasonable for them to come kick in you door and kill your family for it?

Just something to think about.....

What's even stupider is that the taxes are related to how much metal you have in your gun. One little chunk of metal so that you don't have to pull the trigger every time you shoot... $200 tax. Too little metal on your rifle barrel so that it's under 16 inches... $200 tax. Configuration of metal that is not a commonly used weapon... $5 tax to transfer, $200 tax to make... stuuuuuuupid.

I hardly think, given the nature of how that crime went down, that the NFA violations would have made any meaningful difference to their sentence. They'd have gotten the death penalty. So, pretty much, means life in prison (Cali).

EDIT: Thinking about it, no innocents were killed, so I guess they wouldn't have gotten death. Probably life in prison. But that's moot I suppose. In the end, they got justice.

I agree, and think they got what they desered. But what I mean is, do these big sentences and fines get added to the sentences and fines of people who commit crimes with "real" illgeal weapons or do they just go after the white collar guys who don't know better (especially those with deep pockets)?

Occasionally a sawed off shotgun or otherwise altered gun will be used in a robbery or something and I've never heard "...plus 10 years and $100K for the weapons violation". Just curious as to who these laws punish.

Yeah, they would. But you'd have a hard time finding examples. Crimes committed with NFA weapons are fantastically rare.

More accurately, violent crimes committed with a title II firearm by the registered owner of that firearm are quite rare.

Paperwork violations by registered owners aren't as rare. Neither are crimes committed with unregistered title II firearms, whether paperwork or violent.
