So I am just wondering what you folks average in a 5-shot grouping at 25 yrds, open sights and with what rifle and ammo?

Chuck

is this standing, or bench rested? when you say open site, do you mean peeps, diopters, what? I have a marlin 81 made about 1940, that has a rear peep site.
I was not measuring the groups, but a dude next to me was shooting a tricked out ruger 10.22 with a scope, and at 50 yards, i was smokin' him!!! Love it.
but it was benchrested, with front and rear bags.

Another Winchester 52 here. There wasn't enough space to tell there was different holes. With my Marlin 25 it does just over an inch and the same with my Marlin 60. Thats of course using sandbags from a supported position. I doubt I could fire my Winchester 52 and hit many things from an offhand position. Thats one heavy rifle.

cci blazer 1/4" or less @ 25 yards, 1/2" or less @ 50 yards, 1" @ 100 yards all bag rested and scoped. Ruger 10/22.

I guess the tricky thing is the original poster is doing his benchrest testing with iron sights. Especially if the gun is a bolt-action, how do you ensure you're still shooting at exactly the same point?

CZ-452 Benched open or scoped at 50 meters:

CCI Blazer : PO Soda Can
Winchester High Speed: ~1.2 inches
Winchester Super Speed: ~1.2 inches
Remington gold dot: ~1.5 inches
CCI SV: > 1 inch
CCI Subsonic: .75 inches
Eley Tenex Ultimate EPS: .75 inches (cant figure this one out)
Eley Subsonic : .5 inches

Dynamit Nobel FB40, Lapua Midas, RWS >0.5 inches

These are all edge to edge , dont quite know how to measure center to center.

At 100 m the Eley Tenex, DN FP 40, Lapua all group under 1 inch. with minor trajectory drop from POA.

The CCI SV mantains about an inch, though with significant trajectory drop.
The Stinger and Velocitator will group > 1 inch @ POA

Cameron, you hit it on the head I think. I am shooting a lever action with a shoe-box and sand bag on top of a old desk for a rest. My Browning has buckhorn rear sights in which I don't really care for. So far I am shooting 550-bulk pack Federals and no real complaints yet.

My best group a couple of days ago was definitely under 1" at what was actually about 30 yrds.

My main goal here was to get myself an idea of what a good average is, and then I can hopefully practice myself into a higher bracket in the future.

.37" at 25 yds with a Remington 581. 5 shots Federal Match from the sandbags. Tiger Sight front globe sight, Williams Anschutz FP Target peep rear sight, otherwise bone stock. I have a ER Shaw heavy blank I am about to have fitted to it and am going to put it in a 541 Target stock. Then I hope to get sub .25" groups.

Well my wife today shot a 1.1 cm edge to edge 5 shot group with the same rifle today (CZ452), using CCI Standard Velocity @ 50 meters.

My best on the other hand for the day was 2 cm /10 shot at 100 meters with a 222 Remington Magnum using factory SAKO ammo (55 grain game head).

I do more often than not get > 2.7 cm 5 shot groups, but tend to mess up ten shot groups.

I will try and get some pictures up ...

In response to the original posting...

Using a 10/22 Ruger rifle with factory iron sights at 25 yards puts me at about 3 inches spread. That is leaning over the back of my pickup and using the bed cap for a rest while shooting out on my family farm. I would be using whatever ammo was the cheapest at the time to buy. That's about as bare as one would be without extra shooting supplies and/or modifications to the oriiginal weapon.
