SOUTH PHOENIX - A burglar killed last month by a Phoenix business owner
known for subduing criminals had a rap sheet "five pages long" and was a
known gang member, police said.

Adolfo Ariza Estrella, 27, was shot May 20 during an attempted burglary
at a south Phoenix construction equipment yard. Another burglar vaulted
a fence after the shooting and has yet to be caught by police.

Detective Tony Morales said business owner Doug Click, who last year
helped officers catch a man behind the wheel of a stolen dump truck,
apparently shot Estrella in self-defense.

Click was guarding the offices of Arizona High Lift after a burglary the
night before left one of the glass front doors broken and vulnerable to
thieves, police said.

Click heard the two burglars enter through the broken door and went
downstairs with a 12-gauge shotgun, police said.

Click told police he was attacked in the dark by the pair with at least
one of them wielding a 3-foot-long steel pry bar.

(BAN STEEL PRY BAR!)

The men struck him
repeatedly, leaving a bruise and welt on his right cheek, police said.

After shooting Estrella in the chest, Click called 911 at 12:12 a.m.

It was the second time that Click's do-it-yourself law enforcement
brought him into the media spotlight.

He was captured on TV news March 21, 2002, trying to stop a man who led
police on a 45-minute, high-speed chase in a dump truck.

After the truck crashed into a vehicle in central Phoenix, the driver
fled on foot. Click, who said the suspect refused to surrender, pounded
him with a baseball bat. That incident brought Click national attention.

Click was out of town Tuesday and unavailable for comment.
