Fella's;

I'm looking for a second-source confirmation of a recent cyber attack on the Buckeye Firearms Association. Did the search here & didn't see thread devoted tothe issue. If this is old news, I apologise, but I very recently saw it on another site as an undated link. I'm also getting reports of more & more cyber attacks against pro-RKBA sites and individuals.

Is there anything that we as a group can do to forestall what to me are criminal actions? Is there a way to locate and prosecute the originators? Or are they even capable of being found? Hmmmm, could the NSA find them? Better use of their time I'd think.

Cyber attacks happen to a lot of people/companies and it's usually not politically motivated. It's usually because there is a security vulnerability on that particular network or if it was a company specifically targeted it's usually for bragging rights/fame.

In fact the most popular hacking group Anonymous had an excellent pro 2A video back in January/February. They (like many hackers) value freedom from oppression. I wouldn't get too worried that it's some kind of conspiracy (of course, that could just be what I WANT you to think). :)

Best protection you can do is to keep an antivirus running and Windows and other programs you use often updated. Don't click on random popups that come up when you're online and scan downloaded files before opening them.

Anonymous never claimed that, it was smaller people who were using that name

Columbus Dispatch news article on the situation.

Hackers angry that an Ohio gun-rights organization raised money to buy George Zimmerman a new gun launched a cyberattack that disabled the Buckeye Firearms Association’s website.

Ken Hanson, the association’s legislative director, said members began receiving phone calls and threats shortly before the website crashed on Wednesday. An anonymous tweet also indicated responsibility, he said yesterday.

The gun-rights group had been in the news after its charitable arm, the Buckeye Firearms Foundation, said this week that it had collected donations in excess of $12,000 — far more than the original goal of $1,000 — to send to Zimmerman.

Never underestimate the rapacity of dedicated, passionate fanatics whose credo is "the end justifies the means."

Terry said that.

The attack on Wednesday, however, not only took out our website, it effectively shut down our hosting company, disabling thousands of other sites.

We've been asked by local and federal authorities not to reveal specifics before they complete their investigation, however we can say that we quickly identified the culprit and his motive. The attacker wanted to stop our fundraiser for George Zimmerman.

He took our site offline, but he failed to stop the fundraiser.

We need to keep the pressure for RKBA on even though the socialist gun grabbers do despicable acts.

Fella's;

I think that it'll be a very telling point to see how vigorously the culprit is prosecuted. Will the current administration weigh in with counsel about possibly violating the culprit's civil rights? We shall see if fair and impartial holds sway in the current climate surrounding fallout from the original point source.

i think the current administration will probably make the charges disappear.

This is becoming a discussion instead of a plan of action so I'm going to move it to AD.

Let's keep the discussion within bounds for A/AD and not wonder off on speculation about whether the government will do this or that. Bigger organizations than Buckeye were damaged by the attack and their interests will also drive the investigation. The investigation is being handled by people who are interested in catching the folks that did this that are beholden to the state.
