A few weeks ago I did a review of my new 7.62 MK12, it only had irons then. Well I mounted a Mueller 4-16x mil-dot and a Sightmark mini red dot. (both budget scopes) For the Mueller I used a ADM QD mount on YHM risers, and for the sightmark I used a YHM offset rail.

The Mueller arrived with a foreign object or imperfection (probably optic grease) in the lower left quadrant of the glass. I mounted it anyway to see how it would shoot and see if I should return it for the same scope or get a different brand. I think I will give Mueller a chance to make it right because the scope is pretty clear and held zero after 140 rounds of 308.

The Sightmark arrived in a nice box with adjustment tools and appeared of very high quality for "cheap chinese junk". I purchased it with the idea that I would upgrade later to the Burris, but after using the Sightmark I am impressed. It worked really well and held zero, it was also brighter than expected during the bright NM sun today.

I used 168 grain Federal BTHP match to sight in the Mueller at 100 yards. The rifle and scope were grouping .75inches at best and 2 inches at the worst. But the average was 1.5 inches at 100 yards. After getting comfortable with the scope and rifle and learning the mils I started to shoot at 10x10 steel targets at 300 yards. The rifle would consistently hit steel using 1 mil up and 3 mils over on the Mueller.

For sighting in the Sightmark I used 147 grain Winchester M80 ball ammunition at 50 yards. The little reddot took some getting used to being in the offset position, but once I figured out good positioning of the rifle it worked real well and efficiently. The only downside to the offset position is the rifle creates a blind spot on the opposite side of the mount. The chinese holosight repeatedly held 2 inch groups at the 50 yard line.

Nice rifle

I picked up two DPMS LR308C's installed the same rail system you have on your MK12. What a fun and accurate rifle they are. I'm using an ACOG on one and plan on putting some decent glass on the other. Watch out for the anti DPMS/Bushmaster guys remarks about your rifle. They could give Nancy Pelosi a run for her money when it comes to what's good or bad for you. LOL:D

I agree with those guys in regards to the 5.56 rifles particularly Bushmaster since I have one and had to fix the innards. But, for 7.62 (308) rifles I think DPMS is pretty well made, I mean it has billet receivers for mercy sake. While the DPMS 308s aren't as nice as the 3k$ LMT, KAC and LWRC it is darn good rifle for a 1k-1500 dollar rifle.

Why the offset red dot? This is obviously not a 3 gun or social weapon. I am a bit confused by the overall configuration.

For fun! It was only 79 bucks and I thought it would be fun to see how the 3 gunners utilize the offset mount (which I thought was dumb). It also surprisingly works well for shots at 50 yards or less. While this rifle is heavy it may be the one I grab for "social situations" outside of my home due to the caliber and versatilty of the setup, also it only takes one screw to remove the red dot.But to address your setup question this is obviously a bench gun, but I am interested in 3 gun in my area.

Dpms 308

I took a chance on the DPMS because the other top shelf brand was pretty much crap after 2500 rounds. So far no problems and the price was right. I'll let you know in another 1500 rds how this one holds up.

Nice! I've got the 16" LR308 and am considering a similar setup for 3-gun/disaster situation, just with a 1-4x optic instead of the 4-12 and offset RDS. How's the weight/balance aspect of yours? The 16" while a bit heavy, balances nicely enough that I don't notice the weight too much. Seems with the 18 heavy barrel and rail system, that thing might become a bit of a pig for any extended off-hand shooting. What has your experience been so far?

Also, that's a sharp looking rifle.

The rifle handles well, but you do notice the weight of the forearm. I weigh 220 and can hump the rifle around comfortably, but for someone else that may not be true.

Also I noticed when I was shooting irons off hand that the weight up front didn't help to keep the muzzle down for rapid fire drills.

Unlike others I like the offset red dot mount and am thinking about getting one on my ongoing 6.5 grendel build.....have a question though...does the forward part of ur scope diameter interfere with ur reflex sight ? Very cool rifle by the way.

The reddot and the magnified optic do not contact if that is what you mean, but if you don't hold it just right your field of view is obstructed on the left side using the reddot.

So I was wondering If you still LIKE your Mark 12? I just ordered one and couldnt find information on them. Mine is for the 5.56 and I hope I didnt make a mistake so just your thoughts would be great! Thanks

Nice looking rifle, Mags. I'm looking forward to hearing more about it. You'll also have to let us know how the Sightmark holds up on a .308.

Bart, I still like the rifle but I have yet to get .5 inch groups with it.

After the Mueller fiasco I just mounted a Sightron SII 6-24 mil-dot that I will test out and zero later this week. I will also bring some Hornady 168 grn TAP and Federal 168 grain HP match and see if I can get .5 inch groups. Keep in mind I am aware DPMS never advertised the rifle as sub-moa capable but I like to push it.

As for the Sightmark and the angle mount I found it kind of goofy after a while and removed it after a few hundred rounds. The mount I used to angle a Surefire off of an AR15 and the red-dot has been moved to a 12ga shotgun! The Sightmark has survived 50 rounds so far of 12ga magnum buck and is still kicking.

I will update back here with pics after the next range session.

DPMS sass 308

Hi all I have a DPMS SASS not sure yet how to get photos on here but Im having some trouble's with it woul dlove some feed back

trying to do the breake in as sugested! took a wile for first box of 20 rounds . but after that the next 5 to 8 rounds it started Jaming & soft hit On the Bullet so I would have to push the foward assest I called DPMS they said Just keep shooting ok 200 rounds later still have same problem this Is NEW not used!! or abused. now the gun shop said they would not touch it to send it back its scoring the bullets bad some how .in the feed. but Im scared to ship this thing back U know UPS ..

I emailed DPMS and they told me that everyone of their barrels would do sub MOA groups with the right ammo! So we will see, I will pick up my new mark 12 tomorrow but need to save up for the scope! Ill try to swap with a cheaper scope but am looking at getting a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40! Do you guys think it would be a good combination for target and varmint hunting?

Back today after 200 yards with the Mark 12 and Sightron scope

Went to the range today and zeroed my new scope on the Mark 12 .308.

The scope is a Sightron SII 6-24 mil dot and it was beautiful. The turrets tracked well and zeroed quickly. I zeroed it for 200 yards.

The performance of the DPMS was average for a 308 battle rifle but not on par with the .308 tack driving ARs out there.

Here are some pics of my groups and rifle. For a size reference the Shoot N C target has a 6 inch diameter, all groups were shot at 200 yards using 4 rounds of Federal 168 grain BTHP match.

What kind of trigger do you have in it? A heavy, gritty mil-spec trigger is not conducive to good groups. You may want to get a match grade trigger if you don't already have one.

Groups are not "tight" ...

... but they are consistent. No problem with the shooter; maybe with the trigger. dao.

My dpms 308 has one of the worst triggers I have ever had and I have a lot. Sightron scope may not be helping either.
