Does anyone here carry a back up weapon such as an ankle holster or just something in your back pocket? just in case.

I ALWAYS have my Smith 642 in my pocket and most of the time when I head out somewhere I carry my 1911 and a few magazines as back up. You never know what could happen between two old ladies fighting over the last loaf of bread at wally world...

How is the holster a weapon? Do you slap them with it?

Seriously though, yes. I ALWAYS carry at least a pocket knife, usually pepper spray, sometimes a BUG, and once in awhile a sherman tank.

Ok, maybe not the tank. :neener:

I ALWAYS have my ASP defender and a Kershaw of some flavor. 90% of the time, I also have a GLOCK 30. The other 10% of the time I am either in class or somewhere that ccw is off limits (read; while drinking/at bar). Sometimes I add a GLOCK 33 or a S&W 442 to my ankle.

XDGirl - as Loomis said "fists, thumbs, teeth, feet". Believe it or not, a legally licensed (CCW) person in New Mexico is forbidden to have more than one gun on their person concealed. A little fuzzy about OC while CCW, I'd have to spend a half hour or more hunting through the NM Statutes to clarify. Seems one gun at a time, unless you are in your automobile/truck, then all bets are off - you can have any legal weapons. I would love to hear the politicians reasoning (oxymoron - two words that do not combine) for that restriction!

Way I figure it the gun is my "just in case". Situational awareness, insight and judgment are my self defense tools. If all else fails and I have no other options my gun is my back up plan.

I consider on occasion carrying a back-up gun but always decided in favor of more magazines in my belt instead. I am more worried about running out of ammunition than my gun having a catastrophic failure.

I have considered keeping a back up gun in my car but ended up just keeping some loaded magazines in the glove compartment instead. I doubt I would ever need those but they don't cost as much and still give me a sense of being proactive.

I don't really consider a pocket knife to be in my arsenal of self defense tools, sure I could use one if I had too but I know next to nothing of their use as weapons nor do I really allow for their use as a part of my "mental preparedness". Basically, I don't consider a knife to be my backup weapon.

Yes. It's more like my main carry in that I always have it and when I can get away with tossing a big one on my hip, I do, which is whenever I'm on my own time... i.e. not often. The BUG stays anyway because it's so comfortable and not a burden in any way.

My feelings exactly. Pulling my gun (God forbid!) is the very last option available to me.

XDGirl, in considering how and where to carry a backup weapon, think about why one would need it. It will likely be in a position of distress (flat on your back after falling, being shot, rolling on the ground with an assailant, inter alia). Thus, it is vital that you are able to access the weapon with either hand and especially accessible with your non-dominant hand.

All methods have pros and cons:

"In my pocket"--dangerous, can be slow to draw and not optimal if you are seated.

"On the ankle"--slow, but great if you are seated.

I like it on my left (non-dominant) side on the belt. I can reach with either hand and it comes out very quick.

Just have to see what works for you. My suggestion, buy a box.:D*

*the box is where you put holsters that do not work for you*

Nice call, I have many holsters and many of them seem to not work for the situation. But given the right clothing/situation, they would work and are not completely useless.

As I talked about more and more folks who CCW, there are two "themes"

1) someone has a gun in there truck/car concealed (which requires a CCW permit in my state) and normally does not carry on there person unless they think they need it.

2) someone who has a number of guns, and switches guns depending on clothing and such.

I can see the use for a small BUG that is backup to your main gun.
