Bad 22lr

Bad?

It's just a .22lr? What's so bad? It's only Title I. Is this one of those "milsurp" things where "everyone at the range was looking at me"?

Anywho shot one this weekend in Indianapolis. Lots of fun, I think my nephews need one.:D

I read the little review:

Towards the end of our testing, with the rifle well lubed, the only malfunctions we had were directly attributable to touching or putting pressure on the magazine. While it's a natural thing for AR-15 and MP-5 shooters to do-- just don't!

I shot an entire mag while holding the magazine. I did not experience any problems. Could be magazine/rifle dependent.

I read the article here. Mr. Quinn seems to like it. Too bad I dont have any money for fun right now....

Meh, different strokes for different folks I guess.

I handled one once and wasn't impressed. Playing Navy SEAL with a .22 might have an allure for some, and it might appeal to folks who want a real MP5 but can't own one for obvious reasons.
I thought it felt cheaply made, but that's just me. Others may disagree.
You might want to talk to this guy though before buying one. Maybe an isolated incident, maybe not, I don't know.
If you want one for novelty's sake, then I suppose that's different, but if you're really looking for a good semi auto .22, you could probably make a 10/22 or something similar into a nicely customized plinker for a roughly similar amount of money (if not less), and have a better gun in the end. JMHO. YMMV.

I've been wanting to break this out for a while...

Has Gunblast ever had a bad review??

They seem to be like Gun Test Magazine... everything they test is GREAT!

I would not go on just their recommendation. I would do a search....

The only .22 autoloader I'd go ape for right now would be an American 180. Even in semi-auto, that would be da bomb.

I shot one and liked it so much that I now have three. The rifle and two pistols one which I will be getting the tax stamp to make an SBR. My experience with them has been really positive. If it wans't I wouldn't have bought multiples. I look forward to the GSG AK as well. I own half a dozen .22s and the GSG 5 is the one I like to shoot the most right now.

If you want a MP5 look alike then you will probably really like it. They are what they are.

Every manufacturer and model of mass produced weapons will have a few lemons here and there. A gun in its first production run is bound to have a few problems as well.

Obviously the biggest apeal of the gsg-5 is its looks. Some people who dont personaly see the appeal and/or think $500 is a lot of money seem to really like to bash the GSG 5.

I suggest you ask people who bash any gun (not just the GSG-5) if they have ever owned or even shot one. Often they have not and are merely repeating internet lore or giving authorative opinion based on handling and shouldering one in the gun shop for minute. These people seem unawre that their opinion is pretty worthless on the matter and they are very quick to tell you what you should and shouldn't want. They are entitled to their opinions but one would be wise to take them for what they are worth, very little.

what is the accuracy like on these , I have read mixed reports on them.

I see them as a great training tool for the Mp5.

If you are buying for the sheer cool factor , nothing else seems to come close to it.

I prefer accuracy over wow factor.

I have never shot mine for groups from a bench. In fact, I RARELY shoot any of my guns that way. The last time I was out hunting jackrabbits however I took and made shots out to around 40 yds.

My impression from hunting with it and plinking is that it is reasonably accurate. More accurate than my 10/22s in my hands. Which isn't to say that it is more or less mechanicaly accurate than the ruger only that I find my self able to shoot it better. It is note worthy that my 10/22s have factory stocks and barrels. I haven't dropped $500 in extra parts on them. I would tend to believe that the GSG-5 probably is less accurate than the $800-1000 tack drivers that are out there.

I have been wanting to shoot a few other guns I have for groups to just to see what they can do, the ps-90, pre 64 winchester, and a couple of saigas. If I ever get around to shooting them off a bench I'll let you know.

I would be interested to see some range reports from people who regularly shoot from a bench for groups.

That is what I was curious about , being as they are close to $500 , I was hoping for better accuracy than one could get with a 10/22 with $300 worth of mods.

Nice looking gun though . If my kid sees one , I just know he is going to want one.

How has the reliability been with it ? And have spare mags become more plentiful yet ?

I haven't had the chance to shoot a GSG yet. I want to though.
They have the "cool factor" going for them. However, I like dropping the Ceiner conversion kit in one of my AR's and plinking with .22 on a platform that I shoot most of the time.

Cool looking gun though.

GSG-5 What every aspiring Mall ninja wants for Christmas.

Oh sorry i could not help myself. If ou want one get one. Me I will stick to my tack driving Remington bolt action 22lr.

Thats a nice false dichotomy. It goes well with the ad hominem. Why would one be limited to one or the other? The only reason I can think of is that if $500 is a prohibitive amount of money. If it is, well it sucks for that person but need not factor in to any one elses decision. I also imagine that many potential GSG-5 owners would use their rifle differently than one uses a bolt gun. I know I do.

The gun is mostly for looks. There is a bit of premium in the price for said looks. I suppose those members here that find that so inconceivable only where plain white t-shirts since they are less expensive and just as functional as other shirts with logos, colors, etc.

The bottom line is that if you think a GSG-5 is cool and want one there is no reason not to buy one. If someone asked for the best value in a .22lr I would steer them in a different direction. If some one asked for the most accurate .22lr to sit at a bench and try to shoot the smallest groups possible then the GSG-5 probably isn’t for them. If someone is in a financial situation where $500 is a boat load of money then they probably should not buy any gun but there are more economical choices if they must. If some one wants a fun plinker that is a riot to shoot and they love the mp5 looks the GSG-5 more than likely won’t disappoint. There is a reason that stores cannot keep these things in stock. There is probably a reason as well that no one with a significant amount of trigger time behind one has come on here saying they suck and that the critiques are those that have never fired one.

I'd love to bring a GSG-5 to the range and fire it on the pistol course. The look on the safety officer's faces would be classic.
