Making a Pistol Into a Rifle.....

Not unless you put in the paperwork + tax to the BATFE. Whack the barrel off yours and it's a short barrel rifle, Form 1 and $200. I think you can take the pistol and turn it into a SBR also but not sure about that.
But to answer your question, no, without doing the paperwork you can't put a stock on a pistol.

so then who can explain the Thopson Center Encore/Contenders that you buy an encore pistol and the stocks interchange with the rifle stocks......

DTD is correct. Once you put a stock on it, it becomes a short barreled rifle. If you want to do this, you must file your Form 1 and get the stamp BEFORE you can put the stock on it.

In addition, I'm not sure that the rear trunnion will accept a stock anyway.

The upper of my AR is interchangeable with a 7.5" upper as well - doesn't make it legal to install it. It's my understanding that if you put the stock on an Encore, you must have a 16" barrel on it.

These firearms are legal, so long as you attach a 16" or longer barrel before you attach the shoulder stock.

If you attach the shoulder stock prior to the 16" or longer barrel, you've committed a federal felony if you don't have a tax stamp for that particular firearm.

It will. As others have said putting a stock on it prior to completing the needed legal work is a big time no no. Fill out the forms and pay $200. It is much better than being charged with a felony. Also putting a vertical fore grip on it (in pistol form) is a no no unless you get it registered as an Any Other Weapon (AOW) and pay the tax for that.

I just bought one of these and plan to SBR it. I too like the SBR look much more than the fake can. Enough that I'll pay an extra $200 for it.

That's good to know about the stock. There was a pistol version at the last gun show but my brother didn't pick it up because we didn't know for sure if a stock would just drop in. If it will, it'll be cheaper to SBR the pistol version and buy a stock than to SBR the rifle version and cut/recrown the barrel. Do you know if the brake is threaded on? Gotta be able to put the can on it
