In today’s LA Times (Monday March 13 2006) there is a frontpage story titled “An Outward Show of Political Influence”. This is the link:

Basically a cop wannabe has organized a group of friends to donate money to Sheriff Baca. In return he and his friends get badges and cards designating them as “Homeland Security Support Unit”, “Sheriff’s Executive Council” and Bureau of Justice”. According to the article, these I.D.'s are real-looking enough to make some people think they are real.

Buried deep within the story: “Baca’s staff has approved concealed weapons permits for Nalbandian…” and another guy involved in this nonsense.

Why is this (re: concealed weapons) not in the sub-headline?

And what is this @!#$%$#!ing nonsense! Lee Baca, Bob Doyle (Riverside Sheriff) and San Bernardino County Dist. Attorney Mike Ramos are simply selling favors. These guys are supposed to be top law enforcement people.

The only way I'm getting a CCW here in Glendale is if I can prove there's a loaded and chambered gun being pointed at my head at this moment. And even then it'd take 6 months to get one.

Guess I'm not giving the right amount of money to the right people.

Baca has approved of so many CCW permits for actors and influential people that they are all called "Baca's Celebrity Posse". When Edward James Olmos received anonymous death threats, Baca approached Olmos and asked him if he wanted a CCW permit. Olmos turned down the offer.

Sheriff Lee Baca is the ONLY local/county/state law enforcement official in the entire USA that has his own private jet. It's not a "private" jet, however, for it was purchased with L.A. County tax dollars! There are pilots, flight crew members and ground crew members that are ALSO on the L.A. County payroll. When Baca was asked why he had his own private jet, he stated that he "needed it"!

Remember the Northridge earthquake back in 1994? Due to the massive damage, the L.A. County Supervisors imposed an additional .5% on the California State sales tax of 7.75%. That extra .5% was supposedly a "temporary" tax. Well, all of the earthquake damage has been repaired and PAID for, but the "temporary" tax increase hasn't been lifted! It's now being used by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department for jail costs and to hire new deputies.

Over the past 2 years, Sheriff Baca has griped that the additional income from that "temporary" tax hasn't been enough! He was a very loud proponent of having yet ANOTHER .5% tax increase imposed in L.A. County! The County Supervisors turned down that request....so Sheriff Baca THREATENED that he would have to give "early releases" to most of the County Jail inmates! When Baca didn't get his way, he actually STARTED the "early release" program!
Shortly after hundreds of releases were made, the County Supervisors just "happened" to find an "overlooked" fund of $14,000,000 that was diverted to the Sheriff's Department! Baca is STILL trying to get that additional .5% tax increase for "future projects"!

The other counties in California STILL maintain the "standard" of 7.75% sales tax. Baca is responsible for "bleeding" L.A. County citizens of the higher sales tax rate....and wants MORE! I don't foresee that tax increase as being a "temporary" one! Add to that, I'm sure that Baca still "needs" his multi-million dollar "private" (paid for by the county citizens) jet! Heck, maybe he "needs" it to transport a few of his "celebrity posse" members on law enforcement-related "junkets" to distant golf courses!
