Bad / worst firearms advice?

When I first started bowling pin shooting with my S&W mod 28 (and missing a lot), this advice, from an "old hand at guns" :
"You'll never hit anything shooting like that (meaning DA), those guns were not made for it. You have to cock the hammer real fast before each shot."

In the mid-80's I read in one of the glossy gun mags that .38 Super supposedly can be fired from a .357 Magnum, because the case is semi-rimmed and will stay in the cylinder. I took that to heart and when I picked up my Model 19 at the gun store, attempted to pick up a box of .38 Super with it. Very embarrassing.

Hehe, not really bad gun advice, but. . .

I was at a gun show once. I was probably twelve years old. I'm meandering around, and I overhear a seller trying to push a knife on somebody. It was a big folder (I'd say blade length was about five inches,) with a blaze orange handle, spring assist, serrated tanto blade. He kept snapping it open during his sales spiel, part of which I remember vividly. . .

"If you ever get mugged, and you pull this baby out, *snap!* I guarantee that guy will jump back six feet before he blows you away. . ."

Still gives me a chuckle.

I was at a gunshow a few months ago, and this guy and his girlfriend were admiring a Barret M82. The girl asked why it was so expensive and the dealer proceeded to assure her that the gun was well worth the price because it could "Shoot down helicopters and jets from over a mile away."

Overheard on a range
First guy - "Darn, I'm out of 10mm"
Second guy - "Oh here use some of my .40 S&W, it'll work just fine"
First guy - "Okay, thanks"

I told my local gunsmith I was looking for a used .357 revolver with a 3" barrel.

He told me that .357 magnum was "barely controlable" with a 4" barrel, and anything shorter would totally useless.

I was going to ask why there were so many made with 4" and shorter, but decided that even if he had an answer, I probably wouldn't believe it.

At a local box store I was talking to the clerk at the firearms display and he proceded to tell me all sorts of silly crap.

1) his colt python was barely controlable and you had to be a very experienced shooter otherwise it hits you in the face when you fire.

2) a .22 would make a better HD gun than a 9mm because 9mm is totally inadequate for anything.

3) you cant shoot coyotes with a 30-06. You should just use a slingshot and save yourself some money because you couldnt hit a coyote anyways.

I bought my ammo and got the heck out of there before he had time to try and fill my brain with anymore nonsense.

As in the slug rises out of the muzzle, drops at 25 yards and falls at 50 and rises at .....
I just walked away.

Anything video game related is also very, very funny: Silenced, golden AK's, etc.

"_______ doesnt have that much recoil."

"it's hard to hit stuff with a shotgun."

"get a/an __________ for that _________ so you can ___________ better with it."

although the blanks can make it good advice depending on what words you put in it. But, more often than not, they don't.

At a gun show in the mid 90's, where a dealer was selling illegally modified guns. It was a minor technical violation, slotting a non slotted flash hider, to make the gun more 'cool'. My buddy who was with me knew about the specific violation. I think it was specified in the Clinton gun ban that has expired, but don't quote me on that.

I realize that isn't advice, but a dealer selling an illegally modified gun, no matter how insignificant, is not doing his customers or the industry any favors.

(Don't bother asking who the dealer was or where, I honestly don't remember him, or the show I was at, as I've gone to a lot of shows over the years - and don't recall seeing that dealer since about that time frame - maybe it caught up with him?)

"9mm Makarov? Same thing as .380." (I was told this by the dealer that sold me my Makarov.)

"What do you need a reload/back up for? If 6 rounds/10 rounds/etc. aren't enough, it's hopeless."

"Having a gun only amplifies a violent situation."

(On magazines for my FN 5.7)
"What do you want a 30 round mag for? If you got time to get 10 off, you're already gonna be dead."

Cuz you shoot till the threat is neutralized...thats why.

"If you ever shoot a prowler, make sure you drag him into your house. You can kill anybody, anytime, as long as they're in your house. Just make sure you stick a butcher knife or an old untraceable pistol in their hand before you call the cops."
