Baked on finishes - matte black on stainless revolver?

Hi guys- I have a 6" 629 Classic that I absolutely love, but am thinking it would be fun to do a matte black finish. I'm looking for something that's really tough and durable.

Do you guys have a specific finish that you would reccomend (bake on?) - and a preferred shop to do the work? Any of you have success with DIY versions of these processes? I'm very picky about the outcome, want it to look like the finish on a 629 stealth hunter....

Thoughts?

Sounds like a good way to bum up a fine revolver, IMO. There is nothing that you can spray on and bake in an oven that is gonna be 100% durable. If you are very picky, you won't like what your gun is gonna look like after some hard use of hunting.

I think any of the newer finishes would look nice only for a short while. All the metal on metal moving parts on the exterior of a revo would eventually wear any finish. A stainless cylinder ring on a black gun would bother me. Howsabout a darker, matte, blast finish?

The hot expanding gases might destroy a coating on the face of the cylinder and around the forcing cone.

That's probably why you rarely see GunKote, Cerakote, or some other "kote" on a revolver cylinder.

Robar does a two-tone finish on revolvers. They use NP3 on the cylinder and Roguard on the frame. NP3 is a nickel-teflon plating and Roguard is a matte black coating.

Two other options are Melonite and Ionbond DLC. Either of these will give you a matte black finish on top of stainless steel.

With normal care a stainless gun will look as good 10 years from now as it does today. That is the beauty of stainless in my opinion and would not consider changing it.
