They're not new, but Smith and Wesson 3913's are fantastic little guns that don't get nearly the attention they deserve. 8+1 capacity, single stack 9mm, no tupperware. Nice and compact, carries like a dream.

I paid 355+tax for the gun and 4 magazines.

If you don't mind spending a hair more Vance Outdoors has the Springfield XD9SC for 425.00.

One of the best compact guns made!

Comparing the specs of the CW9 to the LC9, Overall length, width and height are almost identical, but the Kahr has a longer barrel (3.5'' vs 3.12"). I'm trying to figure out what advantage the LC9 has over the Kahr.

For pure bang for the buck, I'd look at either a heavily used Glock or a nice Taurus. The shooting value on Glocks doesn't deteriorate much, so even if it's not pretty you're getting reputable performance.
The Tauruses..i.es... have a bad name, but I've never even seen a lemon, so I really don't know where the bad rep comes from. And they're cheap, plentiful and simple enough that most gunsmiths can work on 'em. Unless they're snobs, that is.

And if it's for nightstand and range duty, why does it need to be compact?

Well, I can't asnwer for the OP, but for my hands a large compact, feels miles better than a service size and a "real" compact still feels quite comfortable. The G17, for instance of the M9 are way too big for me to hold comfortable, while the PT911 (not PT1911) and the G19 are comfortable and sit in my hand how the normal "service size" ought to.

Used Glock 19 or used Sig P6. Both will serve you well. If you choose the P6 make sure you get one with a date code after 1991. They will feed hollow points more reliably.

If I had to choose only one with this criteria it would be the Glock due to its capacity.

I would not get the Ruger until it has been out for a while. Their last few guns have not opened strongly. 2 of the 3 have been recalled. They paid for shipping and made it right but why be a beta tester with a gun which you are relying on to possibly save your life. Plus they are not even shipping yet so i doubt you will see one at the funshow. READ the OP people... :)

Don't think anyone's suggested it yet so I'll throw it out there --

SIG SP2022. I've seen them just under the $400 mark, and are great pistols. Accurate, nice trigger, and it's a SIG :)

Nightstand, range, AND CCW? That's a tall order. Maybe a Glock 19 or a Sig P250 in a "2SUM" package but that ain't gonna be under $400.

My vote would be a used Springfield XD 9mm Sub-Compact. I have seen them under $400 on a number of occasions. I absolutely love mine, and it is the one gun I own that I could never get rid of. I have 2000 rounds through it, and I've never had a single problem. It is ridiculously accurate and shoots like a "big gun."

Kind of big for the carry end. It is doable but thickness of the slide and guns profile necessitate a nice holster which will add $100. IMHO.

Pass on the P250. Not a Sig IMHO.

Im really digging the looks of the bersa thunder 9 ultra compact it looks like one of the bigger compact pistols and i really like the exposed hammer big fan of that does someone have a picture of what it looks like compared to your hand and say a full size glock or xd.

Great pistols. Or so I hear from all those lucky enough to ever even SEE one.

They are just about impossible find in my neck of the East Tx piney woods.

ALLUSION:

Lot of rounds for a little gun, fun, fun, fun. How many rounds would p11 take consectively before it puked?

@jdub102003 - it's roughly the size of a Glock 26/27. Bersa UC9 is a nice shooter too, with it's DA/SA and 13+1. I think of it as a "mini Beretta 92" - My only complaint is that it's kind of thick in the grip.

I've only compared my UC9 to my CZ-82 and will post these in case you're familiar with the CZ-82.

A CZ-82, if placed atop a UC9, will completely cover it.

It does have a thick grips, though certainly nothing on can't get used to.

I am really interested in the new Ruger LC9 for CCW. Many are posting below $400 retail price. 1/4/11 Review here.

How do you know he was standing 15 yards from the target?
