I read today, on another board, that because some California Condors died from lead poisoning that the state is considering banning lead ammo.

Have any of you heard about this? Does it have a decent chance of becoming law?

I've heard rumor of this, but can't say for sure.

But yeah, waterfowl hunters cannot use lead shot any more, nationwide since sometime around 1985 or so [Sorry, don't remember the exact year. Missed several years of hunting in the 80's] So, it has a decent chance of passing if really proposed.

I'd really like to see some links to scientific studies that show that lead poisoning is really a significant cause of death in California Condors.

You system absorbs lead rather slowly. A condor isn't going to absorb a lot of lead into it's system by eating a bullet accidently while eating a dead annimal that someone shot.

If an animal were shot and lived, it may absorb a significant amount of lead into it's system, and the condor might get a significant ammount of lead by eating that tissue, but I just don't see annimals that were shot, but lived a significant amount of time with a bullet in them, and tehn died as being a significant portion of a condor's diet.

Environmentalists also don't have a very good track record of basing their arguments on scientific fact.

The environmentalists are opposed to hunting, so they have alterior motives in assigning harm to lead bullets. I'm skeptical that this is really a significant cause. Can anyone point me to real data on this subject?
