I’m a Sig fan and shoot several models regularly. About a year ago I picked up a Browning BDA (220) on the cheap that had somewhere been fitted with a 400 Corbon barrel. I soon sold that barrel and purchased a 45 barrel from the forums and put it in. That barrel just didn’t fit. The slide would come to battery but only with lots of grinding as the front of the barrel hood rubbed the inside top of the slide obviously not clearing it. I have dabbled in gun work before (won’t call myself a gunsmith) so I decided to try to fit it myself. I honed the front edge and bottom of the lower front lug a bit at a time until it cleared the slide, but just by a hair as it unlocked. The back of the block seems to bind pretty hard at the slide came to the end of its forward travel and the back of the hood came up. I lightly honed the bottom front of the feed ramp a bit at a time until it stopped binding on the upstroke. We're talking thousandths here, not fractions.

I don’t know if that’s how you fit a barrel or not and I would love to hear some conversation around this. I do know this. It is by far the most accurate handgun that I have and there’s a stable of them. I can keep that gun in mostly in the 9-10 ring consistently. I can’t come near that consistency with my stock 220s, 226 or 229s. The only difference that I can see is that the front blade appears to be a tad narrower than its more modern counterparts.

So my second question is this. Does that tighter lock up make the difference that I am seeing in accuracy? Or is there some other magic residing somewhere that I don’t see? I did later polish the internal parts and pieces where they rubbed and put in a slightly weaker mainspring that made the DA smooth as butter but did nothing to the SA engagements. It has a decent SA trigger pull but not perceptively better than my 220 or 220C.

Okay all of you gunsmiths and wanna be’s out there. Tell me what you think?
