With the AWB Sunset, do barrels on the AR15's still need to be 16 inches? I have a Bushy Shorty that I would like to cut down and mount a vortex on . Wasn't sure if I had to stay 16 inch OAL or could go lower to maybe 14 inch OAL.

Yep. The 16" barrel length is required by the NFA of 1934. Still in effect.

Model 1 Sales has some uppers with 11.5" barrels and 5.5" flash hiders which give the required 16" barrel length with a little less weight, and no SBR fee. But the long flash hider is welded, so you don't have the option of changing to another flash hider if you had a 16" barrel that was threaded. It's up to you in the end. I think they look different enough to maybe pick one up later.

Just curious. What is the rationale behind going with an 11.5" barrel and a 5.5" flash hider over a 16" barrel?

11.5 Barrel

Even though I've got one and didn't know better when I did, why would you want to give up the bullet performance but shooting the shorter barrel. The muzzle blast and flame is cool to see but I'd much rather have a 16" barrel with a Vortex Tactical that even with XM-193 has very little flash.
