so if I was going to hang a suppressor on the end of a 16-18" AR barrel, does barrel profile matter much? I assume the barrel is only as strong as it's weakest point, so a lightweight profile wouldn't be any different than an m4/government profile?

Basically I am looking at a thin barrel like a faxon gunner https://www.opticsplanet.com/faxon-...-6-5-grendel-mid-length-416-r-qpq-barrel.html
vs a heavily fluted hbar like that ballistic advantage DMR barrels. http://ballisticadvantage.com/18-inch-65-grendel-spr-fluted-midlength-ss-premium-barrel.html

suppressor would weight in the 15oz range. I have more concerns about structural integrity and overall accuracy than I do about POI shift. lets face it, once you have a can, how often are you really going to shoot without it?

Your idea of shooting without a can after you bought one is very right...shooting without the suppressor just doesn't happen.

The barrel profile affects rigidity most as in a lightweight profile will be less rigid (and less consistent, especially when it heats up) versus a heavier profile being more rigid (and as a result, more consistent, even after heating). If the barrel is "more flexible" after it heats up AND has an additional weight hanging off the end, consistency and accuracy have the potential to drop considerably.

The shorter the barrel the less it will matter. Even the smallest AR. Barrels are a lot bigger than a pencil barrel on some bolt guns.

Some of the new 300 blk bolt guns like micro 7 run a pencil barrel with a shoulder on the end for a suppressor. But they are all short barrels.

Don't have my suppressor yet. Just food for thought I was shooting my 7.62x39 AR yesterday and decided to see if there was any accuracy difference if I took my krink muzzle brake off. It weighs 4 ounces. POI moved 5" higher at 100 yards with a bare muzzle. This is with a 16" bull barrel.

I have a 20" fluted ballistic advantage 223 wylde barrel on my varmint upper and it is a wet noodle. I don't think I would want to hang a 1 lb suppressor off of that.

In fairness, when I hang my magnetospeed on my 6 creed, the impacts move up 2moa and 3/4moa left.

My AR rifles with medium barrels don’t shift much at all with and without suppressor. No more than they would changing from a flash hider to a thread protector. The crown is very sensitive.

Are you familiar with harmonic related poi deviation?
A heavy barrel is, for most application, the better choice to go...except when weight is a concern for whatever reason.
That being said, a single mag into shooting suppressed, things get hot very fast.
