Not sure if this should be in gunsmithing section or not? Mods, please feel free to move if you think I'll get more input there.
Anyhoo, In my search for a 6" Bright Stainless Python, I'm thinking I might just get a brushed stainless and buff it out myself. I have done this before with a Taurus Raging Bull and had GREAT results. So I'm not shy about taking it on. My main concern is where the barrel meets the frame. It looks a little tight in that area to get the buffing wheel in there to get a high luster in that area. If I could unscrew the barrel, it would be no problem. I even have run across Pythons for sale with a 4 barrel set, as if it is an easy task to just unscrew one and screw on another. How do you remove the barrel of a revolver? Especially a Python. Does it require special holding jigs like working on an AR upper? Usually, I'd just run down to my local 'smith and have him pull the barrel and go home and buff then take it back, but we have no 'smiths in our area!

You could buy a barrel vise and a frame wrench from Brownells for about $300.00 or you might consider purchasing a Dremel or Foredom tool and a whole bunch of cone shape felt bobs with lots of Flitz metal polish.
The tight point of the cone bobs will get the polish into tight places and at considerably less cost that pulling and reinstalling the barrel. HTH

Barrels don't just exchange between revolvers, and a mistake trying to unscrew the barrel could result in a ruined frame. Given what Python's are going for today, trying to do this sort of thing yourself would be absolutely nuts. Occasionally a Python owner will ask if I will switch barrels, and the answer is, "absolutely NOT."

Also many Python owners don't realize it, but over the years Colt used two different threads on Python barrels. If you try to screw in a barrel with a thread that doesn't match the frame you will be in a real fix.

Yea, the dremel bits are starting to sound better each day!

I was just hoping it was an easy job to remover the barrel and reinstall the same one.
