BATFE regs & laser engraving?

OK, I feel an SBR coming on

I had always heard the engraving had to be 3/1000" deep and a certain height. I later heard that only ONE of these requirements was true and the other was right up there with "driving barefoot in FL" or "the 3 step rule".

So...... which (if not both) is true, in regards to engagement size?

AND - how deep is laser engraving? Deep enough?

I had my SBR laser engraved a couple of weeks back. It was done at .003 deep. It took a few minutes and looks great.

Everything you need is in section 7.4 of the ATF NFA Handbook.

IIRC laser engraving doesn't go deep enough, we use a rotary engraver.

Height requirement is for the serial number only. Depth is for all required markings.

Well, the laser engraving i had done is plenty deep. The operator (and owner of an established gun manufacturer) programed several passes to achieve the required depth. I was there when it was lasered and checked. The extra passes is why it took 40 minutes.

At the time I did the research we were looking to buy, I'll have to check my notes on why we passed on the laser units.

U.S. Tactical in Oakton, Virginia does ATF-compliant engraving using laser. (The depth setting on the machine is adjustable -- if necessary, it can do multiple passes.) I just had some engraving done by them and it looks damn good.
