Not sure if this has been posted...

"In a move clearly intended by the Obama Administration to suppress the acquisition, ownership and use of AR-15s and other .223 caliber general purpose rifles, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives unexpectedly announced today that it intends to ban commonplace M855 ball ammunition as “armor piercing ammunition.” The decision continues Obama’s use of his executive authority to impose gun control restrictions and bypass Congress."

Yep, that panic didn't take long to set in. All 5.56 ammo will now likely go up in price. The 62gr XM855 bullet can still be found (as of this post) for rolling your own. Those won't last much longer

My first thought when my brother texted me this was "Oh, it's like the ban on 5.45 surplus because of the AK pistols."

It only impacts M855/SS109. Why should it induce a panic-spree on all 5.56/.223? M193, Mk 262, etc are not affected by this ruling.

I don't know. Wideners sold out of cases of Israeli M193 this morning too... my hunch is there will be a short lived run on 556 in general. At least on the stuff that is currently being sold as good deals.

It is just another far fetched excuse by the socialist to tighten the noose.
Their intention is to ban everything... but they are just doing in in increments.

It is only happening now because the major troop withdrawals should mean a huge amount of ammo suddenly becoming available.

Yeah it's going to drive up the price of XM193, for dang sure. It's the only other cheap alternative on the market (but 55gr isn't the best projectile for everyone, so any other 62gr ammo will also feel a huge crunch)

This sucks, as we don't need another ammo panic. But, people being what people are... panicky critters... it's already happening.

Happened. Past tense. It's gone. The new price when they get some more in will likely be ugly. They can keep it. ;)

TOPIC: I object BATFE proposed ban on M855 ammunition

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing to object to the proposal to ban “M855” ammunition and projectiles as described in your agency letter titled: “Framework for Determining Whether Certain Projectiles are ‘Primarily Intended for Sporting Purposes’ Within the Meaning of 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(17)(c).”

Please DO NOT restrict this ammunition.

There are millions and millions of rounds of this ammunition in circulation.
Thousands of shooters use this ammunition every day for bona fide sporting purposes.

I am unaware of even ONE INSTANCE of this ammunition being used in a handgun, and for the purpose of defeating body armor of any law enforcement officer. This proposed ban on M855 ammunition is a solution in search of a problem. There is no need whatsoever for this ammunition to be banned.

Please do not ban M855 ammunition or projectiles.

Respectfully,

I have about 2000 Speer bullets when they first came out in the '90s. I have yet to decide on a good load that duplicates M855 ballistics. Sell them or load them? Any ideas?

I thought M855 was over-priced and not that great before. Not sure why everyone rushed out to hoard it...it isn't cheap surplus ammo. Anyhoo, the BATFE will continue to use any excuse they can to restrict as much as they can.

Reality doesn't matter of course when it comes to AP ammo, any .223/5.56 round from an AR pistol will penetrate any patrol officer's body armor. Only thing that will stop any rifle cartridge is a level III or above hard plate.

I don't have much use for the stuff, but that doesn't preclude my being pissed off that ATF feels that they can, once again, make edicts that directly contradict written statutes. There's no ambiguity in the definition of "armor piercing", and actual armor penetrating capability has nothin' to do with it.
