The "Aim high" thread Reminds me of last Labor Day.

I was doing a favor for a friend and was gunning for a Hunt Test. The first pair of dogs/handlers/judges had gone by and were starting to work their way to the bird field when I noticed one of the dogs already on point. My buddy, the other gunner, and I walked out to wait for the handler and judges and admired the dogs staunchness and the beauty of the scene. It was a gorgeous day, cool, some nice high clouds and a gentle breeze.

The handler and judges finally showed up, this dog was fast and had been on point for several minutes by this time. I got assigned to gun for this dog and my buddy to the other.

Well the handler positioned me where they wanted and flushed the Chukar. The dog held solid as a rock. My O/U came up and was tracking the bird, almost a straight away shot, easy, going to get some work for the dog, a good reward for holding the point for so long and being steady to wing.

Just getting ready to touch off the round when I notice a little bit of orange at the edge of the field where we had been standing. This is in a direct line past the bird. I called no shot. I broke the gun open and the handler and judge are going ***!!! but not in so gentle of terms. When I pointed to the edge of the field, I thought they were going to lynch the idiot who had walked out, "To watch the dogs work".

Now, I would like to think that I would have noticed her standing there even if she didn't have an orange cap on. Even though no one had noticed her walk out there, we were all to focused on the dogs and our jobs. Yeah, she was probably out of range, maybe, coulda been.

A potentially bad situation was avoided, everyone returned home safe and sound. Only bad part was the dog just needed to make the retrieve to earn his points and wasn't able to because of this person.
