All you guys wondering what handgun is best for bears should read the account of an "expert" and his friend being mauled to death by a brown bear (MSNBC). The victims were the non-violent type.

The ranger who put the bear down made a grievous error, IMHO. While two officers with SHOTGUNS watched, this guy pumped 11 rounds from an unnamed handgun into the poor critter.

That's inhumane. One good slug could have done the job.

11 rounds. That's a 10-round mag and one in the pipe.

http://www.msnbc.com/news/977560.asp here is the link.

just read it.

Maybe he was trying to see how well their weapon would stop bear?? I find it hard to believe that two guys with scatterguns would 'let' the bear get as close as 12' from the officer without opening up on this known maneater :what:

wonder what pistol it was? I thought some group in Alaska used G21s??

bizarre stuff, all the way around

In his book, Treadwell said he decided to devote himself to saving grizzlies after a drug overdose, followed by several close calls with brown bears in early trips to Alaska. He said those experiences inspired him to give up drugs, study bears and establish a nonprofit bear-appreciation group, called Grizzly People.

He sure learned the hard way...

Don't mess with wild animals!

BTW, I agree with Avery Goodschott, that bear didn't need to be shot 11 times

The sad part is two bears had to die, because some animal rights guy had to prove a point.

It sounds like this guy was an idiot. I think a lot of people project human thinking onto wild animals and start making stupid decisions around it. The really bad thing is when they then start lecturing other people with the "facts" they learned.

I agree that the real tragedy is that this guy's irresponsible behavior resulted in the two animals being killed and the really miserable task the park rangers ended up having to deal with.

I saw a story on msnbc last night about this guy. He would crawl up to these bears on his hands and knees and sing to them. He was just looking for trouble. And as already mentioned two bears had to be killed cause of his foolishness. :(

And his macho bear taming techniques cost a lady her life.

I wonder who got eaten first?
And did they consider running away or attempt to reason with the bear?

Now we know...
Trooper Chris Hill said the tape suggests a video camera was turned on just before Timothy Treadwell was attacked at his campsite. His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, was later mauled to death by a bear. The recording is audio only, and the screen is blank for all six minutes.

"They're both screaming, she's telling him to play dead, then it changes to fighting back. He asks her to hit the bear," Hill said. "There's so much noise going on. I don't know what's him and what might be an animal.

Lets play with the bears!! Hmm...that doesn't work.
Lets play with the white tigers!!! Hmm...That doesn't work either.

Gee. I guess wild animals can be unpredictable and dangerous. Why didn't someone tell me that before?

okay, if ya'll dont hear from me for no reason, my tarantulas probably got to me and are feasting on my corpse. in the wake of my future demise, please ban all tarantulas from being owned as pets. IFTC. thank you.

p.s. most law enforcement agencies up here do use a glock 21. unsure what park rangers carry though.

Ahhh.....A Dudley Do Right of the Nazi Park Circus whacks a bear in eleven shots with issue sidearm while toadies stand by with shotguns and their mouths open.

As for the two unfortunate entrees the bears had. I have no sympathy for either. They put themselves in the situation and assumed all the inherent risks against the advice and good sense of others. The gene pool is slightly cleaner as a result.

Most LE in AK use G-21s or 22s depending on agency with some allowing choice of either or. The Nazi Park Circus as of a couple of years ago were using Sigs in .40S&W.

I have more sympothy and respect for the bears than I do for those idiots. I dont wish harm on anyone but they got what they deserved.
The thing that really gets me is that if it had been hunters attacked then the antis would be celebrating and informing everyone that this is what happens when you hunt wild animals.
Like was said earlier, the gene pool has been thinned alittle.
