Got into a discussion on another forum as to what amounts to a "hunt". I have a primitive cabin on land that abuts wilderness. There are no other buildings within a half mile or so. No electric and no water. During hunting season when I get up in the morning, I consider my hunt as started. If I look out the window and see an elk, I would try and get a shot. No different than if I were out in a tent. If I shot that elk and someone asked how hunting was going, I would answer, "great, I got my elk" or something to that effect. I was told that shooting a bear from my cabin would not qualify as a hunt, although I have read a lot of tales of bear hunts where the hunter sat over a bait and waited for a bear to come on down and have a bite. I have a bear that seems to be taken with bird seed. I have quit putting out the seed, but he still wanders by. So, help out the old guy. Is this a bear hunt or just eliminating a pest bear?

As long as you are within the bounds of the law, do what you like. Is it a "traditional" hunt in the sense that you wander out in the woods looking for game, or sit for many hours in a treestand, nah. But hey if thats how you like to do it, go ahead, dont worry about the other guy.

I'll never live by another's definition of what's appropriate or not. I've been told that I was contributing to the decline of an entire species when I've mentioned hunting and poisoning prairie dogs on the family ranch. People are free to have opinions contrary to my own. but unless they carry the weight of law, I'm just as free to disregard them as so much nonsense.

Just make sure you set your coffee down before you pull the trigger lol. Im all for doing things in what ever works. I always say "well there's no law against it"

" So, help out the old guy. Is this a bear hunt or just eliminating a pest bear?"

IMO it's both. Call it whatever you like. It's your bear.

Dead bear. No laws broken. Happy hunter. All equal a successful hunt. No doubt there is someone who will argue with your methods and want to discuss whether or not you used the "proper" caliber but just let them rant. They are more than welcome to slog through the timber for 40 days and nights while you sit in the cabin munching on a ham.

Most of the deer i've knocked off, i've been in my boxers... see one on the lawn in the morning, grab the bow, out the other side of the house, pie around the corner with the bow drawn, and thwack!

/It's hunting...it just isn't challenging hunting...so if anyone asked, i'd say i "harvested" a deer off the lawn.
//sitting over bait doesn't require much woodcraft either.

I think you are a disgrace to the hunting world at large......can I have the bear hide if you don't want it?:)

When I hunt, I walk. I hike up and down mountains. I have never been able to sit in one place and hunt. But, if there is no distance requirment for me to walk before I will shoot something. A couple of years ago I got a deer by my woodpile, but that was after I hiked in the mountains all day. When I got back to my cabin there were a dozen deer lounging around. Had to be careful not to hit the truck.:)

It is whatever you want it to be.I once hiked all morning in 10 inches of snow with out cutting a deer track.I returned to the van by a farmhouse for lunch.I dropped my sandwich and shot a doe.I could have stayed there and done the same.In fact,in bad weather,I sat in the old steer shed and took 2 doe and a buck in later years.I call them all hunts.

I killed a big hog once while wearing nothing but my underwear. I stepped out of the camper and shot him while he was rummaging around an old campsite 100 yards distant. One of my more memorable hog shooting stories.

Yeah, but was it the bullet or the sight of you in your tightie whities that did him in? :neener:

I'm still trying to figure why the pig was wearing my underwear.....:D

Thanks I'll be here all night.

I used to be a member of a club in Alabama that leased about 1000 acres. We had a member called PeeWee so you can imagine how big he was. He had to sleep in a recliner because he couldn't get out of a bed so I am guessing well over 500 pounds. He hunted out of his custom van and parked next to one of several old barns on the property. He normally killed as many deer, and just as many bucks, as anyone else in the club.
