We're improving the security of our home and I have a question about those little door/window alarms that are supposed to go off when a door is opened.

Do they have a means by which a person who comes home late after the household is in bed can turn them off before they sound?

Depends on the system; they usually have a control panel that allows one to enter an unoccupied home and turn off the system within x-seconds. Some also have a key-fob remote that will disarm the system.

Yes, we can't afford a whole home system. We just want something that will go off and wake a deep sleeper if the door is opened but that can be stopped by a legitimate keyholder who opens the door when coming home late.

We'll have a kid driving and getting a job soon.

Thanks for the link.

Please consider installing a "real" system... even if you have to save up.

This will do two doors (or windows) and comes with a motion sensor and a keyfob. It's a "real" security system, just wireless. The beauty here is that if you can swing the $200 now, you'll have the foundation for a decent security system.. You can add more sensors as funds allow.

If you are more of a DIY-er, consider one of these:

Feel free to PM - I installed the second system listed in my home and have extended it with telephone voice controls, intercoms, etc.

ETA: homesecuritystore.com is completely legit and above-board. They even have technical forums staffed by people who know their stuff. I'm not affiliated with them in any way.. just a happy customer.

We just want something simple to install on 3 doors that will make a lot of noise if the door is opened but that can be disabled by a person who is authorized before it starts to scream.

Steve,

The first system you linked to is the same one I have. Works great, and I enjoy the feature of having it call my cell phone when there's an alarm. I got it at homesecuritystore.com and also recommend them--great customer service.
