Beginner to hunting

Some real good ideas have already been mentioned:

CA DF&G website: it has tons of info for you. Not only can you check regs and seasons, you can take a look for zones near you and start planning some outings both before and after...

Hunters Safety: the two day in person course is really worth it, you'll have the instructor's mind to pick and I can almost guarantee you'll have some dads there who already hunt that are doing the course with their child to get them started. Those guys are good to talk with during the breaks. Chances are, on one of the days you'll have one of the local Wardens drop in for a Q&A period (the instructors in my area of SoCal do, at least), chat them up, get their card and don't be shy about asking them questions.

Get a .22 rifle: not only can you practice and get proficient, but jack rabbits and ground squirrel are in season all year long for you. Small game is still hunting, you'll have an idea what you're up to while you save up for that first centerfire rifle.

Do you like duck? If so, you might want to add a shotgun to your want list. You have the Sacto Delta in your backyard which opens up both duck and pheasant to you.

Good Luck!

Haha oh man, now a shotgun. Yes I do want one & to hunt duck, but I want to hunt pig, too...
Well I will definitely try to take that hunting class this week or the month after if I miss it. Sounds like that's the first step I should take.
