Hello... Can you recommend a bench Rest for holding my rifle to sight my SR-22 rifle with red dot so it is super accurate? I want to keep it under $100. Thanks.

I built a full on heavy BR front rest that I wouldn't trade or sell for any amt of $$$. With Protektor leather bags.... yadayada. There is a certain gratification to using highend equipment that gives decades of quality service and joy. Buy once, cry once comes to mind?

BUT..... having said that

I also use an X bag. Uncle Buds I think sorta got the ball rolling on this style. May not have invented, but pushed them to the forefront. I use a Caldwell, and snag a small V rabbit ear bag too. Both together are probably <50$. There's a side benefit in that, you can turn the X bag,90* so you're shooting across the V and use it for handguns. The rabbit ear in this instance is used for your strong side elbow. Was using one yesterday shooting a 44 @50yds.

They're reasonably cheap enough, and portable enough not to worry about them. Leave them in a truck or cabin. I don't let the heavy rest out of my sight,if you know what I mean. Good luck with your project.

Would this work? I could strap it in with velcro? 41hmaCVKTbL._AC_SY400_.jpg

It's for a .22LR AR, so not much recoil.

I tend to look a Ergonomics, you know your platform more than someone else.
Ya just have to be steady and repeatable
IMO anyway

You pull the trigger. You have to conform to the bench rest. Your breathing affects your accuracy. Experts say they pull the trigger in between heart beats. Make your own rest. Build a box from 2x4s to your comfortable height. Take an old pair of trousers and cut off 15 inches of leg. Fill the leg with sand or dried beans or plastic beads and secure the ends with electrical wire ties. That goes on top of the wooden box. Now. either your hand goes under the forearm on the bag or the wood part of the gun goes on the bag and you are all set. In order to be accurate, You must practice pulling the trigger otherwise all the fancy equipment in the world won't do you a bit of good.

A set of shoot bags would be the cheapest and some of the better rests for range use. One big bag for the front under the forearm and second smaller bag for under the stock. A decent set can be had for less than $30.

I have several cloth shot bags filled with spent 209 primers; if you want fancier, any triangular-based adjustable front rest with bag and a sandbag for the rear will work

If you really wanted the utmost in accuracy testing for an AR Upper, you could build the rest into the table for the upper only, (i.e., so that the upper pins into mounts on the table, and have the FCG built into the table also, eliminating both human error and 'jiggle' between the upper and lower, though that's less of a factor, if at all.
I'm actually surprised no one has built such a rig (that I know of; maybe someone somewhere has) for testing uppers they've built.

That's some right fine shootin' there, young lady!

Do you have other guns, handguns, etc?

I agree with mcb, I’d buy $100 of sandbags if I were you. At today’s prices, you could get a half dozen Caldwell bags and they will be more flexible than any bench rest. Good for all guns, including hand guns. Use them on the bench with your SR-22 for a comfortable height, hood of your truck, roof of your car, drivers door window....

There have been several such devices built by a variety AR manufactures over the years. They do pose an interesting if minor ATF issue as that bench mounted device with a FCG can becomes an firearm depending on exactly how that system is constructed.

They are also not as great as one might think. The recoil is still an issue and getting a fixture for the upper that fires and have the upper return to exactly the same POA is very difficult. The best versions I have encountered allowed for the mounting of optics on the upper and have a built in system to let the user remotely realign the sights to exactly the same point of aim after each shot. These systems tend to be very heavy, costly, and require that they are bolted to the floor to truly produce groups with little or no operate influence.

For the OP a good set of shooting bags or some of the other consumer lever products already suggested would do just fine.
