Benelli Inertia System

I've got two Benelli's an M1S90 "Tactical" and an older SBE. Both of mine are pre-comfort-tech stocks.

In the M1S90 I've shot buck/slugs
In the SBE I primarily shoot 3.5" 1 3/4 oz steel as it's my duck/goose gun

I wouldn't call either one's recoil all that bad. They do recoil more than a gas gun, but I wouldn't call it significantly more. IMHO, the extra recoil doesn't counter the gains I get from the lighter weight, or the ease of maintenance, which is where the inertia system really shines.

Thanks. That's what I was wondering. Basically, is the cleanliness/low maintenance and light weight of a Benelli Vinci worth the extra recoil? The other gun I'm strongly considering is a Remington V3. That said, I've heard Remington has spotty workmanship of late.

I need to find somewhere or someone who has both available to shoot. I'd hate to pull the trigger on the Benelli only to find I don't like it and just lost 50% of it's value on resale.

I would at least try to handle either one before buying. I get tired of all this BS about Remington quality, because that is exactly what it is relative to shotguns out of Illion, NY. Yes, they did have some Expresses with rougher than normal chambers a few years ago, and that got spread all over the internet like the plague, but they took care of all of those they were contacted about, and the fix wasn't that hard anyway. I have also seen Mossbergs, Novas, and even a BPS being beat on the ground with the el cheapo shells with the steel bases. The V3 is getting rave reviews but very few production models are out there yet. The Vinci is a good gun if you like those as well, for significantly more coin. Like I said, I shot a machining lightened BPS 10 gauge, and I rate the Benelli SBE One the hardest kicking gun I have ever seen. Didn't like the looks or feel of the Vinci/Super Vinci/ SBE II, but that's just me. I clean all my guns - just a spray and wipe - anytime I shoot them, and since I am not going to Argentina anytime with them letting them go uncleaned is a non issue.

I use a Benelli Super Black Eagle II (without the "Comfort Stock" feature) for waterfowl and some upland hunting (pheasants) duties and have never been bothered by the recoil of 2 3/4" "baby magnums". However, if I get twenty shots off on a typical day of hunting I'm doing well and I rarely shoot 3 1/2" loads. My SBEII certainly seems to recoil less than any of my non-auto shotguns and I appreciate the extreme reliability in sloppy environs that I've come to expect with this gun.
In terms of "looks", the SBEII is about as extreme as this old fella can abide. And, in an obviously totally subjective sense, the Vinci is just way too ugly to share a blind with me. :D

I have owned a Stoeger, Vinci and currently own two Affinity's. I also own nine gas guns. If the shotguns fit equally well I've found the felt recoil to be noticeably less with gas than inertia. I've also found the Comfortech stock doesn't do much with light loads but does work better the heavier the payload gets. My Franchi's are used for dove and I wouldn't want to use them for turkey, duck etc. YMMV.

I have also found that the lovers of SXS guns are are among the leading proponents of the importance of gun fit.

Fixed that for ya. :)

On a serious note, I think that you have it backwards. The reason that I initially got into Benelli and Beretta guns was their ability to be fit to me, unlike the more 'traditional' double guns and domestic pump/gas guns. The action wasn't the *reason* that I did it - the ability of the owner to fit the gun to their needs was the reason, and the action type eventually ceased to be seen as highly relevant....

Just for fun have a look at the Franchi 48 AL. 12 or 20. For a 12 you have to go used and they are quite inexpensive generally. I haven't paid more than $400 for any of mine. Including transfer and shipping. Verrrrrry light and long recoil action like the Browning A5. Awesome hiking/walking a lot guns. And I find them more pleasant to shoot than the inertia guns.

I do very much loves me my 48AL's, until they break the non-replaceable action spring tube (usually due to side impacts and/or overzealous stock affixment). At that point, the entire receiver becomes junk and I cry like a baby. At least with my Auto-5s, the tube is silver soldered on and can be replaced.

My M2 Field 20ga is the same weight as my 20ga 48AL, and I don't carry the 48AL around much any more now that I have an alternative. If I couldn't afford the Benelli, a used 48AL might be a very good alternative so long as you know the potential issues.

I find it utterly stupid that a new 48AL costs less than 20% less than a new Benelli M2. I can't see how anyone could justify buying a new 48AL at that price point....

rbernie, why don't you find someone to repair those 48AL receivers ? I had a machinist and a certified aluminum welder who were both gun nuts and worked for me in Ohio and they fixed a bunch of them. They would pick them up for a song and then sell them. The machinist used to make his own card shooting barrels, and he's the one who helped me pare about 2 pounds off a BPS 10. The other guy bought my Marlin .44 Mag 1894 when it wouldn't shoot the main thing I wanted it to.

I have 2 Benellis. A Competition 12 (now called Legacy) and a Legacy 20 ga. I've never really been bothered much by the recoil, even after 100 rounds of skeet. Shot my friend's Browning A5 Light and my brother's heavy weight too, but never liked either one...obviously personal preference. I do have to say my Benellis have functioned flawlessly, which I cannot say about a few other shotguns I have owned. That's worth a lot to me.

Benelli M4 kicks way less than any other 12 gauge I have shot FWIW. Has to be cause of the gas system!
I own an M2, an M4, a supernova tactical and a 11-87 tactical Remington. There is no comparison. The 11-87 is the softest action of them.
