benelli sight fell off

my friend bought one 'o those fancy benelli autoloaders used and the first time he shot it the front sight fell off! he's thinking about shipping it to the factory, but he was hoping to find a solution closer to home, maybe even a tritium sight, but the darn thing was just soldered on. any suggestions? (besides solutions involving hose clamps)

Any decent smith can silver solder or braze the thing back on. Do that, sell the thing to someone you don't like and get an 870.

yeah, he asked a good 'smith about it and he said that it would mess up the finish. i haven't seen it since the sight fell off, but i know this 'smith is good he's done some quality work on some of my guns, mostly minor stuff and i've seen his custom pieces, so i trust his word on it. i'm not sure but it sounds like anything heat related would mess up the finish. i was thinkin' j.b. weld. i know it's super ghetto, but as long as you didn't let it ooze around the edges it ought to work, i've repaired radiators that way before. what say you?

JB has worked on the stuff I've done, but it might mess up the finish.

If your smith doesn't want to do it, best thing is to return it for warranty work.

Is the Benelli in question an "HK" stamped gun, or is it a non-HK imported unit?

I've read that Wilson Combat "glues" their front sights to the barrel.

I once owned an M3 and had the rear sight fall off.

Right into the sand, never to be found again.

After waiting six months for HK/Benelli (this was when HK USA was still handling distribution for Benelli) to ship a replacement (this was a brand new shotgun) we finally said that a new shotgun we had received was missing its rear sight, and a new one was priority shipped and in hand in two days. (used to work at a gun shop that did a lot of business with HK)

I shudder to think what warranty service is like...

Bill I hope your joking. If not you need to build up the stock enough to see the front sight, otherwise you will shoot way under whatever you point it at. GUN FIT.

MY guns fit, just the beads must have shrunk. I can feel 'em if I use a rag to wipe down.

I just look for the leading edge of target - I can see that, it is the stuff too close that my eyes don't pick up.

When one ages sometimes their arms get shorter. Give it time kudu...you'll see. err I mean you won't .

Many of us learned to shoot without sights/ beads on shotguns. I also learned to shoot handguns and rifles this way too.

Gun fit to shooter is really that important, especially on a shotgun. Shotguns are pointed - not aimed. Gun fit with Correct Basic Fundamentals...

kudu, Dave, Corriea , HSMITH, Smoke, Lee, PJR, ysr_racer, myself and many many others have lost a bead in the midst of a tourney, be it clay games, 3 gun, training school...and never missed it, never missed a beat.

Steve - When I cut the front sight off of a 16ga Model 12 to make a grouse gun, my vest filled up much faster.

... of course, it MAY have had something to do with getting rid of the few extra inches of barrel which kept getting caught in the trees and brush.

... or maybe something about opening the full choke (like a rifle) out to cylinder.

BTW, a couple months ago I was talking with one of the top local trap shooters (he's run 500 straight in a tournament -- so I take his advice pretty seriously). Instead of his usual single shot, he was using an autoloader (1100 IIRC) with a red-dot sight on it.

I asked him about the red-dot, and he said he likes it and uses it as a training aid. He's got the gun set up so that the dot should be perfectly centered in the sight and it has the same POI as his regular trap gun. If the dot moves from the center at all, then he knows that his form is breaking down somewhere (usually lifting his head ever-so-slightly).

Dave: to be quite honest with you, that's probably the dumbest excuse i've heard for selling a shotgun.

As far as doing shotgun things against land targets, a benelli is likely a better rig than an 870, since all you have to worry about are ammuniton management, sight picture, and trigger squeeze.

Gun new or pre-owned? Do you know what year the gun is?

Did it have one of those dumb glowing orange things ? did the orange fall out or the whole sight. I replaced the orange insert with stainless steel.
