I have a Bennelli, Nova, 12 ga. shotgun that simply wont fire in temperatures under 35 degrees. i have changed oils and cleaned to perfect condition. What is happening is the firing pin does not strike the primer hard enough to fire the shell. The firing pin leaves a small dent in the primer and that is all. All mechanisms work perfectly and in warmer weather, it fires perfectly. I am trying to find a way to fix the problem without buying a new gun. thank you for your input.

Im not a shotgun expert but reading up on the Benelli Nova 12 gauge multiple people have had problems with the spring not working right with the firing pin. Sometimes unloading your gun and leaving the spring in a compressed posistion may have worn the spring out depending on how new/old your shotgun is. I would take your shotgun down completely also and take the firing pin out and clean it very well just to make sure that there is no residue keeping it from completely hiting the primer. The last suggestion would be that maybe in cold weather hunter depending on where you keep your shotgun it may be getting some condenstation from like the warm inside of your vehicle out into the cold and freezing the condensation specially if the temp is below 35 degrees. If your hunting out in cold weather try and keep your gun out in the cold to avoid getting condensation and freezing in the inner workings. Try keeping your weapon in cold weather while your out hunting. Again not an expert but just trying to help out.

Well from all I have read a "good" spring will not lose poundage with just compression it only really wears under repeated compression. I dont think this would be an issue of yours.

I would detail strip it agian and this time use Q-tips and a clean rag to remove as much oil as possible from the bolt and firing pin area. This is just speculation but a friend of mine has had the same issue with his Nova and it turns out he over oiled it and the cold weather just slowed it down (15 degrees);)

Also Jswebb45 has a great idea with keeping the gun cold, I froze the safety on my SBEII on opener last year by cranking the heater in the truck and sitting in the blind.

Merry christmas

you should not have to baby a gun like that. detail strip and clean like the above poster recommended. if it still does it, no dice. that's nonsense. send it back to Benelli ASAP

I agree with JRSpicer426. if it only happens in the cold its got to be some buildup somewhere. I just took my supernova out in 20 degree weather and had no problem.

Lose the oil & grease and use Remington Dry-Lube spray in very cold weather.

It won't congeal & thicken like many oils, and especially grease.

If that doesn't do it, you have an ammo or gun problem.

Can I ask one question?
Have you also cleaned the hole the firing pin passes through? Maybe there is an obstruction there.
I also duck hunt with a Bennelli Nova pump. We've hunted in temp below 25 degrees...no problem. Hope you can find this little grimlin.

The last Benelli I repaired that wouldn't fire had a piece of lead shot flattened out and stuck in the trigger housing binding things up.
Might look there.
