Beretta .22 Bobcat or .32 Tomcat: Opinions?

woad yurt,

I always recommend revolvers to folks who are just starting out. I practically insist on them, since revolvers are so much easier to understand. Semi's have a more complicated operation and I think they are much more dangerous for brand new users. ("What do you mean by one in the tube? Oops!")

I'm a big fan of the S&W 642, but you have said your friend doesn't like the thickness. The Ruger LCR is actually the same thickness, but it somehow seems thinner and lighter.

The break-top .32 seems like a very good option. It's probably the best for her right now. :)

If you still want other options, have you considered the Kel-Tec P-32? It is a much lighter and much simpler option than either of the Beretta products you mention. The slide is very easy to operate. Also, it has a fairly nice and long trigger pull. It will almost completely disappear in pocket carry with an uncle-mike's holster. The only problem I have with mine is that the magazine sometimes gets released during normal pocket carry, so I'd need to push it back in if I ever needed to use it.

I did have to do a fairly major "fluff and buff" on the P-32 before it would work right. Mine had several serious problems out of the box, but after a few hours of work I've never had a fail-to-anything.

I alternate between the 642 and the P-32. The P-32 is so easy to carry that I usually forget it's there, and I use it when concealment is more difficult. The 642 provides a more useful caliber whenever I can carry it.

Whatever you do, make sure your friend is safe with what she carries. :)
