I got a few neat new baseplates for my Beretta mags, so I figured Id show off some of the various magazines Ive accumulated over the years-

PB Brushed Stainless "Grey Ghost"

These were original equipment on the early stainless "Grey Ghost" M92s. Probably made by MDS (Meccanica Del Sarca), 15-round capacity, aluminum follower and baseplate. Note they are cut for the Euro-style magazine release buttom, such as found on the M92S. An excellent magazine, somewhat rare.

Another fairly old magazine, this time marked as "MDS" instead of "PB." Aluminum baseplate and follower, also 92S-cut.

Checkmate USGI contract

Ahhh, the infamous Check-Mate! These aquired a very poor reputation in the various Persian Gulf conflicts thanks to .Gov insisting that they use a PVD-based finish inside and out, despite Check-Mates objections. They also lacked the 92S-cut at the bottom, which allowed sand and debris to accumulate in the bottom of the magazine.
Its a shame, because they are good magazines- if kept clean. They feature an aluminum follower, stamped steel baseplate, and 15-round capacity. Marked "For Law Enforcement Use Only," as they were produced under the Clinton-era AWB.

Probably made by MDS, this magazine features a 15-round capacity, aluminum follower and baseplate. Once again, being a contract mag, it has an Assembly number and no cut for the lower-style release. This one came with a 92D that was surplussed from a nuclear plant security force arsenal. No, it doesnt glow in the dark- well, much anyway.

Denel/Lyttleton/Armscor Vektor SP1

These were actually produced for the South African Vektor SP1 service pistols, but as the SP1 was basically a Berettta copy, they work perfectly in the M92, although the very thick baseplate doesnt fit totally flush with the front of the Beretta frame. These use a plastic follower and a very glossy black painted finish. Interestingly, they are cut for a 92S release. I got a pair from WhataCountry.com and they were both in very nice condition.

Please flip over disc for Pt.2..........

Made by either MDS or MecGar, these were OEM equipment before the 17-rounders took over. They feature a matte finish, plastic follower, S-cut, and a hybrid stamped-steel baseplate covered in polymer (more on that in a second).

The bluing on these is so glossy, I could barely get a picture with my crappy camera, lol. So, these are the latest and greatest from MecGar and use a plastic follower and baseplate- which is the whole reason I started this thread. Despite functioning fine, and MecGars well-deserved reputation for quality, the basepate on these is very thin plastic and does not inspire confidence. Note that they are not cut for the 92S mag release.

Here is the MecGar baseplate (left) next to a hybrid steel/plastic PB baseplate (right)-

You can just barely see the steel "rails" poking out of the sides of the PB plate. Beretta does sell just the baseplate as an upgrade part, but I wanted something even more substantial, so.......

I ordered a couple of these nice billet aluminum plates from NDZ Performance on Ebay. Ya, they were $18 each, but they are made in 'Murica and very well machined and finished. They are available in a HUGE variety of decorative paint jobs, or (for a few bucks less) plain black and silver.

Installation is a snap-

Just push up on the spring retainer with a small screwdriver, slide old plate off and new plate on.

I decided to replace the flimsy plastic plate on my MecGars with these-

Ahhhhhh, much better!

Wow, neat history lesson! I have 6-7 for mine and I think only 2 are the same type.

Marked "For Law Enforcement Use Only," as they were produced under the Clinton-era AWB.

Ugh. Several of mine are from that era and, while I don't like 'em, they work just fine so I use them occasionally.

How long until that is an unrecognizable reference? I realized a couple of months ago how the move from cd's to digital music occurred without me really noticing when I was talking to a few co-workers about my age and mentioned some cd's I had just bought. They looked at me like... well, like I was old or something... lol.

I wondered if you were going to include the Vektor mags. Very good quality, but not all of them fit into a Beretta perfectly. I bought a number of them during the AWB, and at least one of them needed a slight adjustment to the release notch. That's when I found out that the metal was very hard. I ruined one of my needle files getting the notch configured correctly. They are also slightly thicker metal than the standard mags and baseplates made for Beretta magazines will not always fit them.

The Check Mates were parkerized inside and this is what caused it.

PVD is kind of like Teflon and is slippy to the touch.

Quite right, I was going from memory of a letter I read from Checkmate explaining what went wrong (and basically blaming the Govt.)
I think I was confusing PVD with DFL which they say is the current finish- and was surprised to discover they are still in production and can now be ordered directly from Checkmates website.

So Y'all know, all of the Beretta black painted aluminum base pads can have the paint sanded then buffed to a shiny (or dull depending on your process) aluminum. Instant Grey Ghost!

Anyone remember the HS 2000 pistol? When they first arrived in the USA for sale they all had only 10 rd mags thanks to Clinton, anyways back then you could drill one little hole in the back of a Beretta 92 hi cap mag and if your measurements where close, that beretta mag works in a then HS 2000, now currently a Springfield XD

Huh, never heard that one before. Cool hack!
