Well, I bought one of those Italian police Beretta 92s's and couldn't be happier (Mag release on the bottom ala the P38). It was in great shape with no scratches or dings and only a bit of bluing wear; I put some nice Pachmayrs on it and replaced the D spring and it's becoming one of my favorite pistols....except for the rear sights.

Couldn't find anything specific about whether these guns will take any rear sights made for any of the 92 line. Wondering if I need something special or if the dovetail has to be machined....or can I just buy an off-the-rack rear sight for any Beretta 92?

Short of machining the front sight off and then cutting a dovetail, I see no way to change the front sight and I'll probably have my smith do the rear one as I'll let him figure out how to insure it shoots to POA at 15 feet.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe the 92S sights are smaller (shorter) than a standard 92F/FS/M9. So if you were able to put a rear sight in that was meant for a 92FS, your point of impact would be crazy high.

I have no idea if anyone makes replacement sights specifically for the 92S, since those pistols were replaced by the 92SB by the early 80's, and then eventually the F and then FS.

Maybe there is a way to drill and then pin a taller front sight on the existing front sight base?

Do you really like the European heel mag release? If you like everything about the 92S but want a standard American-style mag release, why not look around for a used 92F/FS/M9? At least those will have more useful sights, and you'll save the money on a gunsmith trying to alter your 92S.

If you want a real dovetailed front sight standard, you'll have to move up to a higher-end model with the thicker Vertec or Brigadier slides.

Also, I've seen some 92S police trade-in imports with stubby sights, and others with even smaller, almost non-existent sights. Hopefully, you got one with the somewhat useful variety.

Sights are serviceable....not not much more.

I have no problem with the heel release as it isn't a carry gun but strictly a range toy and it fits in to my Beretta "collection" (1935, model 70, 1951, this 92s, a Taurus PT 99 [clone with adjustable sights and frame safety that's my lower-price version of the regular 92's] and a Stoeger 8000 Cougar.)

For carry I have a S&W m60 .38 with bobbed hammer and trigger job (pocket carry piece) and a Smith 908 and I just bought my first striker fired pistol, a Smith m99. By HP is my favorite with a CZ clone (Tanfoglio TZ75 on the list of most shot). There are a few others...mostly Smith 39 and 59 series I can carry if I want a full sized gun.

I haven't talked with my gunsmith yet...we'll see if he has any good ideas.

A qualified gunsmith can change the sights to pretty much anything you want......for a price and on a 92s it will not be cheap. Probably the rear dovetail would need recutting for non metric dovetails and the front sight would require welding to bring height up or dovetailing the slide then perhaps reblue. I just suck it up with my 92s and blast tin cans all over the place with factory sights.

I agree the sights on the 92S are all but worthless. I painted my front sight white, and that helps some in picking up a target.

You might be able to replace the rear with a low profile adjustable sight. I've considered that option, but for a sub $300 gun, I just didn't see it as worth while. Mine is my truck gun, so I figure I'll be "point & shoot" most of the time anyhow............no precise target work for this gun.
