I purchased an A400 last week mainly for sporting clays duty. I was looking for a 12 gauge semi-auto that my wife could shoot comfortably and that I could use as well. I decided on the A400 due to it's low weight and recoil reduction technology.

Out of the box this is one beautiful shotgun, nice lines and deep black bluing, it is a definite step up from my old faithful 870 Express. It comes with 3 chokes F,M and C, choke tool and bottle of oil in a nice hard plastic case.

Shouldering the gun feels good, just slightly shorter than I would like but it fits the wife great. I do have to consciously get my head down on the stock to get the rib lined with the bead on top, I think this is from years of shooting the 870 and the muscle memory I have built up.

I took it out first for some pasture clays thrown straight away to make sure I could hit with it. I smoked the first one so I knew I couldn't do too bad with it. I ended up hitting a lot less than I should but I expected that.

The gun handles great, the balance is about perfect even with the heavy Kick-Off system in the butt. The receiver is very light so the barrel balances the butt nicely. I did not notice the recoil at all with 1 1/8 oz.

At the sporting clays course this weekend I was able to take the wife out to ring it out. She is a very green shotgun shooter who is very recoil sensitive. She ended up shooting about 70 rounds of 1 oz loads and wasn't too sore at the end of the day. She also shot 2 rounds out of her brothers Maxxus and a 20 gauge 870 Express Youth model both of which she said kicked harder than the A400.

The gun performed flawlessly though the 170 or so rounds we put through it. I ended up with a score of 60 on a very difficult course(CO state championship warmup was held the day before), below my average but by the end I was hitting 8s and 9s. I wasn't sore at all and could have easily shot another round unlike with my 870 I was always sore after 100 rounds.

Cleaning afterwards was not as easy as my pump gun but not as bad as I feared. The gas system had some crud on it but I am sure I could have put several hundred more rounds through it without a stoppage. Everything wiped clean easily other than a few nooks and crannies that require some scrubbing.

Overall I am impressed with this shotgun, it is my first auto and will take some shooting to get fully acquainted with it, but I am happy with it. I was also impressed that the wife could shoot so many rounds through it. She has never shot a 12 gauge more than a few shots before giving them up. I think this one is a keeper.

Bring on dove season!!

Sorry for the poor quality phone pics but at least there are pics.

You should have also gotten some shims to adjust the cast a little for either a left or right handed shooter. My wife loves her A400 Xplor with the KO system - it easily handles my 7/8oz reloads and has even worked well with my 3/4oz 12 gauge reloads

I have shot it. but I tend to see too much rib, so the stock doesn't quite fit me, but it fits HER, and since it is her gun, well - let's just make sure momma is happy..... :D

I did not realize it came with that color receiver - the only ones I have seen are the green Xplor and the bright blue target versions

Your right it does come with shims. This color receiver comes with the light version, it is the 3" version. The green one is the Unico 3.5", the blue is the sporting clays version and there is a new brown one as well with a camo version due out this year.

I have the Xplor Unico green one - not that she will EVER see 3.5" loads, even for grins and giggles. Many where I shoot either love these or hate these - and the hate stems from the colors, not the mechanics of the gun. Easy to clean and easy on the shoulder - what's not to like?

So many of us went shooting yesterday that we ended up on different squads, so I haven't shot it yet. But i have handled it and my impression was very light and seems balanced nicely. Maybe next weekend we'll try some more pasture clays.

Yes, the SC course was tough yesterday, but fun. Three hours in the sun pretty much put me out of commission for the rest of the day though. I shot a 52 with my old Citori.

In the event you are interested in lengthening the LOP on the A400, the xtrema spacers do fit. You will need some longer .8 pitch M5 bolts. I picked up some 30mm for the 1/2 inch spacer and some 40mm or 45mm for the 1 inch spacer. Brownells carry both the 1/2" and 1" spacer. I use the 1" spacer in the summer and go to the 1/2" in the fall. I bought the screws from fastenal.

re: the seeing too much rib comment, I had a eureka moment (no, not a Urika moment ;) ) this summer when shooting my SV10 Prevail. I was seeing too much rib and my scores suffered greatly from the previous year when I shot my xtrema 2 in competition. I put the gun in my safe and picked up an A400 xplor, mainly to use for fall upland / pheasant / field work. Mine has great wood and I started shooting it for clays. It was way too short and I added the 1" xtrema 2 spacer from Brownells. It had a dramatic impact and the LOP increase really fixed the "see too much rib" issue. I went back to the SV10 and rigged up some temp spacers (using rubber washers, looks ugly but it works). I kept adding washers until it felt right and now I am seeing the rib the way I should, the gun has even less felt recoil but to better fitment and my clay breakage beyond 20 yards has improved dramatically. I am now working on making my own custom hard rubber spacer now that I know exactly how long to make it.

How much can LOP affect your shooting? Quite a bit. Last year i was an 85% shooter overall with 95%+ at short range targets. This year with the "too-short-for-me" SV10, my short range performance dropped very slightly but my long range performance fell off the map. I ended up shooting 65-70% overall.

The decrease was due to the higher POI due to seeing too much rib. Compounding this was the resulting decrease in gun confidence that accompanied the decreasing scores. Increasing the LOP addressed that.

A bit of a tangent but still something that many don't keep in mind re: stock fitment.

Enjoy the A400!

Absolutely agree about the fit and LOP - for me, though, it is a non-issue, as it is MOMMA'S gun....... :D

I use a Browning Gti O/U, and for fun, a S&W Elite Gold SxS 20 gauge

Maritimer, I did something similar with an 870 here. Number Six has the nice wood it's had on it since 1955, but I saw more rib than I cared for. Using a slip on pad behind the red Rempad, I added shims until the LOP gave me the view I wanted. A few rounds of Wobble and sporting confirmed things. I then dropped it off at a shop and had the smith make it so with a Decellerator and spacers.

Works well....
