Thinking of buying one of these carbines. I have narrowed it down to either the 40cal or the 45acp. I do reload so it will keep the cost down or allow me to shoot more. I live in MA so I am limited to ten rounds in the 40cal. The 45acp only comes in 8 rounds. I did a quick search and ten rounds 45acp are available but hard to get. Any thoughts on either configuration? I am leaning toward the 40cal just because I don't have a 40cal pistol or carbine. Also, two gun stores in my area say they are having trouble getting the 40cal. I called Beretta and they told me it is still available.

You had PM'd me, but I will answer here. I got mine in 9mm because it will use same mags as the Beretta 92, and I think those mags will likely always be available.

Thanks Balrod. I have a Ruger PC9 which i love but was looking to get the CX4 in a different caliber. Have you shot any others?

It is a really fun little carbine.

Have you had the chance to shoot or handle one? Here's something I wrote on the Beretta forum about the CX4 in 9mm:

IMHO the CX4 is a bit of an acquired taste.

There is a lot that I love about it, especially the weight, size, and magazine flexibility (and depending on what you own, potential magazine commonality with your pistol). The ergonomics are okay, and I personally think the design is visually very sexy.

But there are also two big things that I did not immediately like or enjoy; the cheek-slap from the big bolt, and the long/creepy trigger.

The cheek slap surprised me, as I was not used to big blowback action firearms and was expecting recoil like the M1 carbine. At first, I really did not like it at all, but eventually I have grown to not hate it (I still don't like it, but I can tolerate it now).

The trigger, too, was surprising. Loooooooong take-up leading to a heavy pull and a spongy break. Even as a guy who likes milsurps (which have a reputation for not exactly having crisp triggers), I was surprised at just how terrible the overall trigger experience in the CX4 was. I really think -- still think -- Beretta's engineers should be embarrassed for how that turned out (regardless of their motivations for why they designed the fire control system the way they did). I own many different types and brands of firearms from across the spectrum of quality and purpose, and I consider the CX4 trigger the worst of all of them by far.

The fire control mechanism is strange in that the sear is fixed and the trigger actually pulls the hammer forward off the sear. It works, but it certainly does not result in a pleasurable trigger pull or ignition.

Hacker,
I did get to shoulder the CX4 but not shoot one, I was in the store. It feels a lot lighter than my Ruger PC9 and very compact. I did read when doing my research about the cheek slap and the horrible trigger. My PC9 trigger sounds the same as the CX4. It did loosen up overtime, maybe the CX4 will too. I really want it in 40cal. Thanks.

Pistol caliber carbines are different. I dumped my 40 cal pistols since I did not like the recoil and snap. I did however pick up a 40 S&W carbine. I can't tell you anything about the CX4 but the Hi-Point is a gas to shoot with little or no recoil in 40 S&W.

At half the cost of the CX4. Triggers are not great but mine is still being broke in. It does go bang each and every time though.

It's not an AR and you should not have to pay AR prices for one is my opinion.

Good Luck and stay safe.

Jim,
Nice setup! Looks really cool. What kind of magazines does the Hi-Point take? How many rounds do you have thru yours? Any issues with quality or longevity? My Ruger PC9 has over 10K rounds down the pipe without any problems. Thanks Jim.

The cheek slap in the 9mm storm is not that bad. For my purposes, the 9mm was my choice and mag interchangibility with the Model 92 pistol was necessary.

It's a nice little carbine and a pound lighter than a AR-15 SBR with a Rock river 10.5" 9mm upper attached.

If 40 and 45 are your two choices I would definitely get the 40. With the 45 the magazine is only 8 rounds.

Any PX4 and I think Cougar mag will fit in the CX4. Mine was a 45, reliable and accurate. Superb iron sights. Looking back, a 9mm would be a better choice, because in 45 this blowback carbine has a surprisingly annoying kick. Any 45acp semiauto handgun feels better to me, including the PX4. Another nuisance was the blowback smoke from the ejection port right in your face. A handgun is, again, better for being held away from your nose. Such was my CX4. I liked it still but not enough to keep.

I hate to day this but since your limited to 10 rounds, just get a Hi Point carbine. I have had both and the Hi Point was sadly more accurate at 50 yards and it was less than half the price. The only reason to go beretta is for the hi cap mags but thats a moot point in your state. I was actually very disappointed that the hi point also proved more reliable with cheap gravel pit ammo as well. I didnt want to like it as much as my fancy CX4 but it just turned out to be a better rifle.

My 45 caliber functioned fine . I did not like the way the gun fit me however, and it was not as accurate as a 9mm Hi-Point that I had.

The inner workings (trigger/hammer)of the Beretta are also plastic and ,with its high price tag I found that a bit unsettling. Overall feel and fit of parts seemed superior when compaired to the much cheaper Hi-Point but I remain unconvinced that the Storm is worth the extra money.
