My 1934 Beretta 380 functions without malfunction but the ejected cases have a black smudge from the case mouth about half way back on one side. Does that indicate a problem? Otherwise, the cases look fine.

Indicates low pressure not expanding the case enough to seal the chamber. Are you using handloads or factory ammo? If factory try changing brands. If handloads try upping the charge slightly.

If you are using reloads the cases may also have been shot to many time. They will harden up and can't be annealed because they are to short. If you are using factory loads then like West Kentucky said, try changing brands because the loads your using aren't hot enough to expand the cases out against the chamber to get a good seal.

My 9mm cases are almost all this way. They haven't split yet so I keep shooting them. I have noticed that going to a little slower burning powder does help this problem. My Power Pistol and BE-86 9mm loads don't soot up near as much as my Titegroup loads do and I load my Titegroup loads near maximum load.

Not a problem.

As already stated, low pressure ammo, or work hardened brass.

It may also be that you have a hard carbon build-up in the chamber from years of use you are not getting totally cleaned.
That will promote gas leakage past the expanded case.

Use a .40 cal bronze bore brush in a cordless drill on low speed with nitro powder solvent and clean the chamber down to clean steel again.

Ejected Cases Beretta Model 24 380

Thanks all for your replies. I was using American Eagle 95 grain FMJ ammo. I found some old Winchester and Federal brass fired in this gun over the years that I had saved. These cases are clean. I've owned this gun since 1967 and have always cleaned it within a day of having fired it. That's true of all my guns. I've been reluctant to use brass brushes but will try cleaning the chamber as suggested after testing a different brand of ammo to see if low pressure is the reason for the smudging.
Thanks again.
