I'm looking for a good high capacity 9mm and have narrowed the search down to the Beretta and Sig. I'm unconcerned about the price differential. I'm looking for a general purpose combat 9mm for when the SHTF. Which would you pick and why?

assuming you mean the Beretta 92FS and Sig P226. they're both great and both passed the XM9 trials. the Beretta is going to be a bit less expensive. the earlier sigs were lighter but now they're about the same.

The answer is: get both. I was in the same quandary a while back and eventually ended up getting both. Both have high capacity mags, easy to disassemble, proven history, companies that can provide support locally. It's a matter of personal preference when it comes to handling. The SIG is marginally wider in the grip area for me so I tend to shoot better with my M9.

I have both and would choose the P226 because it fits me better, I'm more accurate with it, and I don't like the location and operation of the Beretta's safety/decocker. Both are very reliable and great pistols.

...

I think OP meant M9 and between them, it would be a hard choice for me, but as beautiful as the M9 series is, I still favor the Sigs covered barrel, tilt-up concept, and frame mounted decocker-only.

Not to mention warranty, if one had any issues, Sig CS will take care of you whereas Beretta's CS will not and charge you the overnight shipping, meaning, owner has to pay shipping charges vs Sig will send customer/owner a shipping label and pick up the charges -

As it should be,

I am the opposite - I don't care for Sigs, and I have 7 Berettas... Plus, I owned several 92s over the years previously. The 226 grips are too fat for me, and I don't care for the location of the decocker on the Sig..

Go Beretta :) :)

I am biased against sigs because I don't like actions that lock up solely on the barrel hood. Not that it doesn't work, I just think it's a cheap way of doing things.

For the last 27 years I found Berettas to be accurate and reliable. I also don't care for safeties or decockers, so I only use the slick sided models.

Shipwreck - nice collection there. Where's the Inox?

No Inox. There will be no Inox.

As a whole, I prefer silver/stainless/hard chromed semi autos. Even on polymer handguns, I like silver colored slides...

I have owned Two Inox 92s years ago. A stainless 92FS from 1996-98, and an Inox Vertec that gave me headaches around 2003...

For whatever reason, I ONLY like Berettas in all black. I'd even NP3 my carry 92FS for better corrosion resistance... If it wouldn't change the color to grey/silver...

so, only black ones for me. An Elite II would be the only exception, with the Inox upper...

i have both and like them both. for me it's not a good comparison though becuse my sig is a .40 & my beretta a 9mm. the only way i would want to get rid of one is if i sold my sig to get a sig p229 sas .40. other then that i couldn't get rid of either one. for you i think you can't go wrong with either one.

My Sig P226 is my all-time favorite gun. I couldn't recommend it any more highly.

Guns are a very personal thing though, so hold both and hopefully try each out. Most likely a good sized range would have each available as a range gun to try out. Let us know which one chooses you. ;)

Last I checked, most semi auto handguns operate like this.

P226. I can't speak for the newer ones but i got an old west german one as a police trade in, and it has had phenomenal reliability and accuracy for me. try both get the one that fits your hands, maybe the sig doesn't fit maybe it does.

As I recall, Sigs were the first to lock up solely on the barrel hood. Glocks copied them. Pretty much everyone does it nowadays. Besides CZ's and 1911 patterns, the Smith 3rd Generation pistols were probably the last tilt barrels to employ a seperate, fitted barrel lug. They also used a hand fitted barrel bushing. That type of craftsmanship has become too expensive. Even they have switched to just the barrel hood for their tupperware models.

Don't usually post on the "X Vs. Y" threads but I had a W. German P226 and LOVED it, my sister who is active duty Army has an M9, LOVE it as well. If I had to choose, I would go with the P226 simply because it feels better in my hands & controls seem to be better placed for me. Althought my sister would vote the other way for the exact same reason. Both are crazy accurate and very durable...so I guess whichever you like or both!

beretta is more accurate
Not in my world.

And you guys who say the SIG had thicker grips... anyone have measurements? The Beretta is known for its large grip circumference and mine feels larger than my P226. I haven't measured it, though. I will tonight if I remember.

Get the Sig better ergonomics and accuracy. The 92sf is a FAT girl in the grip, the 226 is much more slim. Plus if accuracy is key the Sig will be easier to tighten up no need for a custom tapered cone bushing.

I have both because I like them both and would argue that the op is in a good "predicament" because he won't go wrong with either the SIG or the Beretta. If I had to choose one or the other, I'd probably go with the SIG but only because it handles better for me.
For those who find the Model 226's grip to be too "bulky", I'd suggest trying an E2 version on. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much better this variant feels-at least in some hands; certainly it does in my rather largish hand.
