Thinking of buying a Cx4 carbine in .40 SW. Having trouble finding one and dropping the dough for it. Already have a Px4 .40 , but I'm meeting a lot of grief from people telling me to go with a Mini 14 instead. Anyone have thoughts? Anyone own a Cx4 and can attest to it's good rep?

Do it. I was just extolling the CX4's virtues in another thread. I have a 9mm (to go w/ 92FS) and love it; but like the .40S&W much more than the 9mm as a cartridge; if i had to do it again, i'd do .40 instead of 9..and i would have gotten a 96 instead of a 92. But that was then, and this is now.

I also have an old Ruger Ranch Rifle. It is nice (and stainless) but for precision accuracy it is not a contender - the barrel is so thin that with each successive round the point of impact walks up the page and to the right...its a #180-series, and i hear that the newer #580's being sold now have thicker barrels to eliminate this problem.

Between the CX4 and the Mini- the rounds have different characteristics, so i won't go into that - but i will say that the CX4 is smaller, lighter, more ergonomic, mags are cheaper (hey, you've got them already!) ammo is cheaper, and the system is more accurate overall w/ the stock in line with the barrel, like an AR. It is also fully ambidextrous...I'm a lefty...so you can eject to either side and have the charge handle, and the safety and the mag release go to whichever side you prefer. It's also got the rails for all your tacticool gear. I only use the rail that pulls out below the barrel for a laser/light...but there's the potential without a whole aftermarket stock rig you'd need for a mini. Without a folding stock the CX4 can go in the well/compartment over the spare-tire in the trunk of my stationwagon (where it lives, with a trigger lock). Mainly, i use it for rabbits, and the occasional coyote, gophers, etc...pretty much what you'd use the mini- for.

Also, on a corporate note, Beretta is great, and a lot of people have problems with Ruger. The only mags that work well in a Ruger are the factory ones - which are not cheap, and took 5 months to arrive when i ordered 4 of them a while back.

Good luck with it. I don't know you, but I know you'll love a CX4 (especially in .40!).

I've got one in 9mm and love it. It shoots great, anything I've fed it has been reliable and it's very simple to field strip and clean.

I thought about a Hi-Point, but in the past couple weeks the word on the street is that the company is stopping production on them, and in my area, they're flying off the shelves.

Having owned both the CX4 and the Mini-14...

Go with the CX4. Its cheaper to shoot, lighter, smaller.

Lets face it neither is a target rifle, and for defensive purposes you cant legally shoot someone in a defensive situation when they are 100 yards away.

Also, better options for accessories, relatively inexpensive & reliable magazines, the CX4 might actually cost $50~ more than the Mini... but in my opinion, its worth it. I wish that I had bought a CX4 back when they were $600, but I got one last week for $800 :(

Or you could save yourself about $500 and get a HiPoint carbine in 40, if you just want to have some fun at the range.

or save yourself alot of headaches and buy a quality gun the first time. the CX is a very nice little gun.

If you check the Hipoint forums the company folks have explained that as a small company they usually only produce one or a few products at any time. They produce a certain number of carbines then they switch the tooling over to produce a certain number of pistols. They have no plans to stop producing the carbines permanently.

Soon they are introducing a new stock model for the carbine. It would be strange to do that if they are gong to discontinue it.

I do all my shooting indoors and wanted a rifle in a pistol caliber for that purpose. I did some research and read quite a bit about the CX4. I asked questions on this forum and others. I went to the range to order the Beretta and they had a lightly used one on the shelf. I put my $350 on the counter and with the money left over, added a harris bipod and a Bushnell scope to complete the needs list. It's a lot of fun to shoot, very reliable and easy to maintain.

They're great shooters. I looked at getting a .40 after I bought my PX4. This was back when the CX first came out. They were running around $600 then. I see them at gun shops and shows now and they've jumped to $800...at least in this area. I hope they're better priced in your area.

I have had the cx4 in .40 for about 2 years and its super fun/ergonomic/accurate at moderate ranges/cool/not a hi point. makes a great home defense carbine/range plinker/truck rifle/ boat rifle.
If you are looking to use it for home defense consider this It is shorter that a 16in ar15 and you don't have to worry about over penatration as much as you do with 5.56/223

I say do it. I would get a Beretta carbine over a Mini 14 any day. (not a Mini 14 Fan)

they are a bit expensive but in my opinion they are wonderful weapons. If I didn't already have a 9MM AR I would consider getting one myself.

speedo66 is right I have one of them in 40 also it too is a great gun and it does fold, I still prefer the beretta but its alot more money. Check gallery of guns website they have the beretta in stock in .40

Get one.

Reliable, accurate, and relatively cheap to shoot.
And more than adequate for HD/SD. A 135gr .40 caliber Hydra-Shok at 1400fps works.
