Just passin through!
Now I know it ain't a 1911 but...
Last weekend I was over at the local GM (Gander Mountain) to restock my reloading supplies as they are currently having a sale running. I wandered over to the firearms section for a look see....Nothing really jumped out and grabbed me until I was almost ready to exit...then it happened...A little Bersa .380 Thunder Duo-tone started calling my name...Now I have never even really so much as looked at a little gun like this since I was a youngin and carried a .32 auto (mouse gun I know)...all my other guns are heavy metal...but this thing really caught my eye. So I asked the kindly gent behind the crazed counter if I could check it out. Drop mag, press check smooth...Guy actually was surprised I did that...said most folk don't they just take it for granted the guns are always unloaded :( Anyway....I fondle it a bit, and dry fire (after asking of course) and like the way it felt. Stripped and reassembled it in under 2 minutes. Action seemed quite smooth, fit and finish was excellent, no wobble slide to frame. Big 3 dot white sights, nice grip with a finger groove on the bottom of the mag. The Thunder has a 3 position manual safety with decock, also has a key lock safety on the frame to deactivate trigger and slide. Only came with one 7 round mag standard. Price tag on it was $199. By the time I was done swappin stories etc with the counter gent I had a new addition to the family...the gun, 2 mags, holster and 100 rounds of ammo $189 OTD. Of course I had to wait the obligatory 72 hours to pick it up...Picked it up on Wednesday afternoon, took it home and cleaned it up...have to say this was the gooeyist new gun I have ever cleaned up. This gun also strips so easy it's almost silly. Cleaned up nice well lubed and all functional.
Took it to the range yesterday to try her out and introduce her to her BIG brothers and sisters. I was very pleased....first shots outta the box were all on paper, though not exactly where I wanted them  See the target on right pics below. The rear sight is adjustable and I tweaked it a bit...next shots were all pretty much where I wanted them (yes there are 7 shots on the pic on the left.) after I got used to the generous recoil of this little gun. I have to admit that I did not give this little gun the respect it was due....after all it is a 9mm short... ;) Anyway function was flawless, I put 300 rounds of WWB bulk pack (Wally World) with a combo of FMJ and HP with no issues what so ever. I did find that the WWB seemed to tumble out past 10 yrds...But all things considered I'd never be using this gun for long range work anyway....strictly a pocket protector for close range work.... ;) Plan on using it in place of my Beretta 92FS as a range gun in my pocket while shooting my other guns. Shots all grouped well as you can see by the target below left. I kept my shooting at 7yrds....
The only complaint I had was the 7 round mags....go through em way to fast....First shot DA is long and stiff, but subsequent SA shots are smooth, crisp and fast. Too fast....again 7 rounds go quick.... :D I found I was able to consistently group as indicated by target on left as fast as I could pull the trigger. Enjoy...be safe....mack
Overall this is a very nice firearm....I'm thinking it may become mrsmacks house gun as she seemed to enjoy the way it felt as much as I did. Also noticed while she was checking it over that the business end is quite large for a little gun..... (yes..it was unloaded and it was intended that I see it.)

Mack - great lil' gun eh?!! I am well fond of mine ... under-rated I think by some. Nice write-up. I daresay if horge finds this thread he'll add some useful comments too ... I am sure you will have seen his web site - tho if not, you'll get the link from his sig line.

Did you take those pics hand-held? I wondered cos seems perhaps some camera shake has lost you a bit of definition. Try a tripod, and/or pull camera back a bit as well. Not trying to be destructive with a crit' ... constructive hopefully. It is a very pretty piece - here is it's brother ..... :)

Re:

Thanks Chris....I can see this gun is gonna be lots of fun....No worries on the photos bud, I was trying to take them while the wee'un Cody who is 2 was bouncin around on the bed. True boy thru and thru....gets all excited at daddy's guns...and this one being new really wanted to see it. I noticed the bad case of fuzzies after It was posted...mack

Thanks for the report, mack 69! (and hi Chris/P95!)
I like my own Thunder plenty.
:)

Oh, now I remember. My wife had just corrected me the other day.
It ain't my Thunder.... it's OUR Thunder.
:D

horge - just took another enjoyable cruise thru your site ... real nice job. :) Just to mention - the pic I posted here on this thread is a re-reduced pic - from exact same original.

I have found that my earlier use of bi-cubic interpolation was giving me excessive ''pixelation'' and whilst not quite so sharp - have switched to linear interpolation.

This pic is now a tad cleaner than your old one - do grab this and replace that old one, if you so wish.

Best

You know, I've thinking of buying one of these to stick in my pocket when I ansewer the door.

I had peopel knockon my door asking if "so and so" is there. I think what they were really doing is checking out the block.

That is way too geek-ified for a gun thread IMHO, Chris! :)

This is a great gun though. Super range report, and nice pics!

Mack what do you mean by 3 position safety Are you counting the decocking as a safety. You didn't mention the Mag safety pull the mag and the gun is usless. That and key lock only bad features Ive found. You might drop over to bersatalk.com New in town but growing.

Michael, not sure what you are taking issue with here...I did mention 3 position safety WITH DECOCK, and the key lock safety....but I did indeed miss the fact that if you drop the mag the gun is unusable. Not a fan of any of those extra anti "safety" measures. You are correct..aside from those minor setbacks this little gun is a keeper. I'll surely check out the site you mentioned since now I have a reason to.

Horge, nice grips on your Bersa....where'd you get them? Like your site too...lots of good info for my new addition to the family.

Chris....ya goof.....I'll take your advice in the future regarding the photos bud....still LMAO at your response....

If I use your new pic, will you agree to stop talking like that?
This is supposed to be a family-friendly forum, ya know...
:neener:

Mack,
They'se there be homemade, handcarved wooden grips.

Sorry about the gobbeldegook horge and mack! - sorta got carried away (shoulda had that done long ago - I hear mutterings!). :D

Maybe a good time to ask horge a tech question -

If'n I remove the discombobulator from my Bersa - will it harm the functioning of the plungedinger? Thing is, I once tried changing the scramsensitizer and found I could not transmogrify the blinkentube. Someone said to try and fit an OEM zentumbler. No good - had to revert back to std scramsensitizer. Seems transmogrification is tricky on these guns, yeah? ;)

Chris,

The OEM zentumbler is the way to go, but be sure you set the Heisenberg compensator within proper tolerances.

Cheers,
ChickenHawk

PS- Mack, horge made those grips. Pretty cool, aren't they!
