Basically I have done my research and cant seem to find an illuminated 1-4 or 1-6 scope with covered turrets and the possibly a throw lever. Also I would like to keep this under $400 if possible but if there is an optic out there that meets all those up there then I could consider a little bit more.

That is what it would be used for... a little high but might be worth it to get exactly what I want

For a patrol rifle I would get either the Vortex PST or a Leupold VX-R 1.24-4x with the firedot.

The Leupold may be a tad over $400, but it is a good scope.

For the 1-4 power range, you are good with a budget of $400...the vortex or the leupold are your best options and worth going up an extra hundred

the 1-6 power range gets expensive quickly. Primary Arms has a great 1-6x scope for a reasonable price. Otherwise, the next best option is the Nikon 1.5-6x24. amazing scope, definitely worth looking at even though its $200 dollars over your budget.

The Swarovski Z6 1x6 is the best scope in the class but very expensive. I could only afford one. I have several other rifles I need to scope and have been doing research for a while now.

I own the Nikon and came very close to buying the Leopold VX6.

I have tested the Minox 1 x 6 next to the Nikon and the Minox is the clear leader. I would not say it is better than the Leo VX6, but the difference is not worth the $600 more for the scope.

The Minox has high end German made glass.

The Minox is a very, very good scope for $329.00 and you won't get a better bang for the buck.

I have the Burris MTAC in both 1-4 and 1.5-6 powers. The 1.5-6 power is the one I use on my 3-gun rifle and it has been fantastic out to 300 yards while still being able to handle CQB distances very quickly. Put a MGM throw lever on it and it fits exactly what you want. I prefer the 1.5-6 over the 1-4.

Another vote for an MTAC. I have the 1-4 on my PTR, and it's been pretty darn great.

I also have one of the Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS on an AR, and while I really like the reticle, I'm not sure yet it's ready for patrol use. If it holds up, it's a great scope for the money.

how is the optic for any of these on 1x will be using it mostly as a red dot but for the occasional distance shot.

Slower then a real red dot, and less forgiving of your head placement bring off.

It's the trade off of having a scope.

if your talking under 400 a 1x4 vx2 leupold is about as good as it gets. It isn't going to compete with some of the others mentioned but for 3 or more times more the price they should be better. Ive seen many dangerous game rifles that are used in Africa wearing them. Opticaly they certainly aren't a top end ziess or Swarovski but they are just as reliable and have decent glass.
