So the more I read this forum, the more I learn and the more interested I have become in the 17 HMR for my boys for Christmas.

I had a thread the other day on .22s for under $250.

Same question here. Which 17 HMR is best for $250 or under?

I hate to see the word best in a thread, it sets up such unachieavable expectations. And then everyone gets defensive, and has to prove they are the best, by proving they bought the best. That being said, I bought a Savage 93R17FV for $169. I put a cheap Optronics scope on it, and a rifle basix trigger (it was before Accutriggers). I shot a .283" five shot group at 50 yards with it. So you can spend more, but you're not really getting more.

The best what? Accuracy? Fit & finish? Balance? Cost?

The rifles by CZ, Savage, Marlin, ect are all excellent in some respect. CZ has better fit and finish, Savage is noted for accuracy but Marlin owners swear theirs are tighter shooting. All Will be better in some place then the next at this price point, even higher cost rifles such as Cooper, Kimber, ect out do each other in some reguard.

I`d look at the various offerings and choose what feels best to you.

I dunno, I got pretty good groups out of a ugly New England model. Hard to go wrong with several offerings in .17HMR.

I think the 17 HMR is truly one of those cartridges where spending more money doesn't make your targets look any better. Almost every brand made will outshot the shooter. Wait, you can say that about almost anything........

I bought my Savage bull barrel on a whim for $225. You could probably do better by shopping around some. It shoots 3/4" groups with Hornady ammo and a cheap Simmons scope. I would say it's the most enjoyable gun to shoot that I own. It won't roll a groundhog like a centerfire, but it'll kill 'em deader than world peace out to 75 yards. I've heard of some folks killing ground hogs at 200 yards with it. An absolutely great round that they will find useful the rest of their lives. Oh, the only thing I don't like is the clip feed.

If you want to adopt me for Christmas I'd like to have a Remington Model 7 in 308. I promise to always keep the yard mown.

My neighbor has had 2(first one was stolen) Savage 17HMRs with bull barrels. I want to say he paid around 250 for em too(not sure). I shot the first one and have seen him shoot it several times. The Savage is really good gun.
Unfortunately I bought a Rem 597 17hmr. Its a nice gun and is pretty accurate. But it jambs terrrible. I think some of its the mag. Mostly FTE probs. If I werent left handed I would have bought a Savage. But they didnt have any left hand bolts in 17HMR. I dont mind shooting a right handed auto, unless it screws up alot. Basically I have a single shot rifle with an 8rd mag.
If I ever come across a left handed Savage or other bolt action, Ill buy it, then sell or trade off the Rem and take my losses.

Savage and Marlin, they will both be this amount or under, and they will both be wonderfully reliable, and accurate, the nef is as well, but if you shoot a lot, that single shot will begin to piss you off, especially since you have to move your whole rig, cheekweld, everything, every time you load a new cart. I really dont' think a cz is enough of an accuracy improvement to buy it for an additional 100 bucks, if you want assured jump in accuracy, get an Anschutz. i did, and it is the only 17 hmr I am now keeping, every other 17 I have is a mach2.
In case anyone is interested, I am selling my LEFT HAND, wood stocked, brand new Savage, and my brand new in box, Stevens 17 hmr, and brand new in box remmy 597 17hmr. They are unfired, it is just that after I got the Annie, I decided that was it, but of course, again, the Annie is a lot more dough.
To DZL HOG; on the remmies, you want the latest generation mags, and you want the guide rails pulled out, then refitted back in almost all the way to the end of the receiver. This will stop the jamming problems.

I have the Marlin 917V, and I love it! You just want to have the bolt open to insert the magazine, otherwise it's a little difficult. You can get them for about $200.

I bought the Marlin. It had a horrible trigger, which I replaced with the RifleBasix unit for about $70. It was pretty complicated to set up, but was really sweet when done. Good shooter, but I'd suggest a Savage w/Accutrigger.

Savage. Had a Marlin, could never get it to group decently at 100yds. on a calm day.

I'll go for the savage with accutrigger. Like gbran said the Marlin 917v trigger is horrible. I installed a BSA sweet 17 scope on it and I can hit a coke can at 100 yards every shot pretty much. Okay I missed sometimes a couple maybe more ha-ha-ha.. It's the trigger!!. So the accuracy is there but probably be more accurate if the trigger is lighter.

You can get a CZ Trainer in .17HMR for just under $250 from Whittakers. I have 3 CZs, and you simply cannot beat the performance for the price.

I got a Savage in the first year they were out. Put a Simmons scope on it. I paid $200 otd for the rifle. Any scope will help you get the most from the rifle as the 17HMR is very accurate coming from most anybodys rifle.

Rather than spend more on the trigger I took mine apart and moly lubed the parts then shimmed the trigger group. I don't think a very light let off is a good idea for a field rifle, but a crisp let off is always good.

marlin triggers

So I had to check the triggers on my marlins, I have an older 17V that is a little heavy but with no creep, and was dissapointed to find out the newer 917V is both heavier and creeps quite a bit, I have also owned the savage with and without accutrigger, it's an improvement no doubt, but not perfect.
