Which .22 LR ammo do you guys find to be the most accurate?
I just got back from the range with my Model 60. CCI Mini Mags really suck, Remington was almost as bad and I left the Thunderbolt at home by mistake.
I had a box of old Western standard LR and found it to be right on.

Try subsonic ammo. CCI makes some that have an MV of about 1065 f/s. I've read SS ammo is more accurate due to the fact it doesn't enter the trans-sonic velocity range. Apparently, when a bullet breaks the sound barrier and then drops below it again, instabilities occur, but I'm no physicist.

i'm assuming you're talking about accuracy, not reliability? I'll second what Jason says, and suggest SS rounds. There is also about a thousand different kinds of "target" ammo in 22LR to choose from.

Eley Target at about $8.90 per box of 50.My Ruger Mark II Target pistol will shoot one ragged hole at 50 feet with open sights. The gun has a Marvel fully adjustable trigger, Volquartsen Sear and Hammer kit. The rear sight was changed to the Volquartsen rear site. I have about $1,000 into that gun, considering I have about four solid days work on the gun myself.

Try a few different boxes of standard velocity LR. they will all usually be more accurate than the hypers or even high speed .22s. BUT, every 22 rifle likes what it likes. You have a 20 different combos to try. Try getting a UPS box with say 10 different loads from Graf & Son or something. Once you know what it likes, you can save that and shoot up the other ocn water balloons and oranges :)

Wolf, Eley, and Federal have some decent midgrade ammo out there that shoots well. Eley, Lapua, and Federal make the top tier ammo. The more you spend, typically, the better it will shoot.

Eley match EPS black is good stuff...

I've also had great accuracy out of the Federal automatch from Walmart.

My match barrel likes stuff at or just below 1056ft/s

Just read up on Eley, looks pricey but might be the way to go.
So the real trick is to stay subsoinc and not trans-sonic?
What about copper jacket / coated?

CCI Standard Velocity works very well in most of the .22s I have used, although it can be a bit more expensive ($30.00 or so for a 500 brick), and it gave me more consistent results and less "spitting" from the barrel/cylinder gap on revolvers.

Federal bulk (525 , 375, 550 rounds) works very well in almost everything, I have found. The Automatch works well, also, but is just a tad more expensive.

For an interesting experiment, load a magazine or cylinder with Federal and Remington and notice the difference when you fire them back-to-back. The Remington has a much sharper recoil and report.

Every rifle is different, every brand and type of ammo varies from lot to lot. For those of us stupid enough to shoot rimfire benchrest, it's a game that's heavily dependent on finding the very best ammo for your rifle. Just when you think you've found the magic ammo, you run out and the next batch doesn't shoot worth a darn in your rifle.

For the average joe, shooting a semi-auto, it's hard to beat CCI SV for 5-shot groups around 5/8" at 50 yards, with a few flyers in opening groups to about an inch.

For very accurate sporter bolt actions or highly-accurized 10-22s, it's hard to beat the most expensive and second most expensive of Lapua, Eley, and RWS, but testing to find the right batch is still necessary. Less expensive types include Wolf Match Extra and SK match ammo. It's possible to find the less expensive ammo shoots very well in your rifle. If so, buy as much of that batch you can afford (or find).

There's no guarantee that the most expensive ammo of one brand will outshoot the next grade down. If you want to get the very tiniest groups, you've got to have the best rifle and ammo...test, test, and test more!

The best part of all this testing is that you can also work on holding techniques, equipment improvement and ability to read both wind flags and mirage, etc.

If you want the best of the best to see just what your rifle is capable of there are a few good (albeit expensive) choices. Start with Eley Tenex, Lapua Midas, or Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match.

I have had zero probs with Rem Thunderbolt. runs great in my rem 597,10/22,modle 60.
Henry lever action. What i have noticed is this. If its an auto loader. & the bullets are not a tight fit to the top of the brass. I then have feeding probs. at $1.99 for a box R-Thunderbolt. its my plinking ammo. it is dirty dirty dirty. but i dnt care. It runs very well in all my autos.
PS it runs good in a friends AR-15 Bushy with the 22 drop in bolt conversion.

mini mag HPs are my favorite all-around ammo and both my .22s shoot them well enough to hit a squirrel in the head at 50 yds if i have a tree to rest on. since they aren't working for you, i'd give wolf MT a try. .22 ammo is cheap enough you can just buy 50 rounds of a bunch of different stuff and give it a try. all the experimenting is part of the fun to me.

CCI minimags suck???? What kind of range are you shooting at? They aren't going to be very good at 100 yrds ;) For that you need subsonic or match grade stuff. If you want a good all around 80-100 yrd varmint killer, try velocitors. Everything else, keep it in the 50 yrd range.

Are you going to be hunting? Benchrest? Targets and beer cans? Most bulk packed HPs are decent hunting rounds and pretty accurate for the money, but anything from 1200-1300fps is going to give you major problems starting from around 50yrds.

Was it windy when you went?? Wind will play all kinds of heck with .22 bullets.

As far as bulk packs, my 10/22 and my friends Marlin 60 prefer Winchester 333/555 to Federal and they are accurate enough that we don't use anything else. Most guns I think would prefer the Federals, or at least that's what I hear. There are a few autos out there that really love Remington golden bullets too, so it's kind of a crapshoot.

RWS Dynamit Nobel match loads- they are lead and individually waxed. A box of them ( 20 I think) is like $15 but they are A-W-E-S-O-M-E in my 10/22. With open sights even my inexperienced friends can shoot cherry tomatoes off shish-kebob sticks at like 30-40 yards. Dead on, been using them for years.

CCI blazer (1280fps) is the most reliable cheap ammo I've used. Its not particularly accurate, but it (almost) always goes bang for me. The most accurate that I care to pay for is Wolf Match, which I hear is actually SK ammo rebranded. After that I use Aguila Match Rifle. Its not as accurate, but its close enough that the difference in price makes it a bargain.

All depends on your rifle...I too had no luck with the mini-mags. 3-4 inches at 50 yds through my savage mk II FV was all I could manage. I then tried wolf match and was getting 5 shot groups that could be covered by a dime. Yet high quality federal ammo, although it performed better than the CCI, didn't perform as well as the wolf. Just experiment and see what the rifle likes.

Most .22 rimfires are as picky about ammunition as teenage girls are about how they look. Buy a box of everything you can find and shoot it all - but be warned the first five or ten shots from each new type should be discarded for accuracy purposes. I've found that Federal American Eagle HV HP's give good accuracy in three different .22 sporter rifles. Wolf/SKF target ammo is accurate but not up to the level of the high priced Eley or Lapua.

Very funny! I can only hope you're kidding. You should be using Eley Tenex for that highly competitive game. Anything else is junk!

I never heard of it but anything I can buy to get an edge on my old man and his High Standard .22 pistol sounds like a good idea to me. That old geezer can put every shot in the bullseye at 75 feet shooting rapid fire. He doesn't even clean his stupid gun I can't stand it.

yep the r50 is the Dynamit Noble I use... I never see the Eley Tenex in sporting good stores, must be a specialty item.

+1
So far I have found these to be the worst of the bunch that I have tested in this rifle.
