After thinking about this for a few days I have decided that there are so many good 22 rifles that they almost cannot be listed, but it is fun trying. There almost is no best, just what suits you at the time. Have fun and get a few different types and styles.

My dad had a Browning .22 auto that he really liked. Real nice looking gun, high quality, and although he said his eyes were shot... he could hit about anything he wanted to!! He was a WW2 vet that fought the Japanese and carried a BAR when he wasn't using flame thrower.

I lately had my first contact with SAKO rimfires. A acquired a beautiful M-78 in lr and as of now its the greatest rimfire i ever had. A lot of rimfires of different brand pass through my hands and none compare. Of course the asked price of those is pretty steep and i perfectly understand that not everybody is willing to put that kind of money on a rimfire. A lot of very good rimfires out there. Handle the one you like the most and choose from there and of course do not neglect the used market. Lots of great bargain to be found. Good luck.

The old Marlin 60 I bought in '10 was so banged up that literally almost every other rd. misfeeds, but this might be very rare-even after new parts were ordered and installed by the gun smith.
The gun must have been abused quite a bit.

Right now, the Romanian M-69 Trainer is a good bit more fun that the old (1940s) Savage single shot .22. The Trainers' bores can be very good or excellent.
The M-69 is sort of like a very light weight mini-Mauser, but with better sights.

If you're going tacticool, SIG 522 hands down. It makes the SW MP15-22 pound dirt in every category.

I like my old 39A---picked it up from my dear brother in early 50's
time to refinish the lever.
Under $400---I have a Ruger 10/22 & a Marlin 60 & a number of bolt action 22's

There is no "best" gun. Too many variables, individual preferences, and situations to pick one all around best gun.

Buy quality and you seldom go wrong.
Pretty much my thoughts. I was at the local gun store and saw many nice used 22s that were 50+ years old and had some nice character that would have made me quite happy. Some of the older lever action 22's look really nice as well.

I have a $400 10 22 that is my favorite rifle to walk in the woods with.

stainless carbine bought at a gun show for $175.
BlackHawk Axiom stock
Simmons 3x9x40 scope
PowerCustom internals including competition trigger set, auto bolt release and upgraded hammer spring and firing pin

It comes in at just over 5 pounds and is quite versatile. I have other 22s, one dressed out for extreme accuracy and one with a custom barrel for hyper velocity ammo testing. Both are heavier and cost about twice as much. Strange that the cheapest one is my favorite, but I'm actually looking to get rid of one of the others now since this is the one I almost always reach for. My target one is fun for fine long distance shooting, like the ping pong balls we shoot 350 feet from the front porch. But if I could keep just one this would be it. The target in the pic was 100 yards unsupported with hypervelocity ammo (that was Aguila SuperMax hollowpoints) which is notoriously flighty. Groups are half that with other ammo such as CCI AR Tactical or Remington subsonic hollowpoints. Haven't played with match grade ammo with this one, I have other rifles for that kind of thing. This one is for plinking/ varmint/ small game and never disappoints.
