Best .22LR Varmint rifle

When I was a younger person and growing up in Minnesota, I ran
a trapline before school. As I recall, Fishers were very rare and
found mostly near the Canadian boarder and were in the same
family as weasel/ermine,mink, family. Any challege you, if they
were cornered. Fur used to be very valuable along with a critter
called a Martin. They pretty much go after any warm blooded
animal around their size and smaller. Like fox and owls, they pretty
well put a dent in mice populations. Usually pretty shy????:)

whatever is cheap

get what is cheap and available. you will probably find yourself wanting more money in the future to get other rifles once you experience a having a 22. any decent 22 will work at that range. The price of that 10-22 seemed high to me, as we can get them brand new around here for 169.00 and a brick of amoo for about 11 bucks. you dont need a locking case for a 22. its just a little plinker and varmiter. BTW, i just got a marlin 795 at a gunshow for 150 at a gun show, and it prints 1 inch groups at 35 yards with irons. i got home and found the same gun online for 110.00, and on another site the same gun was 188.00. my point is that price varies from place to place, so that 10-22 might be a good deal although it seems kinda steep to me. good luck and have fun

My 10/22 works great for coyotes, stray cats, and once a rott that the owners refused to keep confined to their property (I will not put up with a dog that chases my child). Use CCI stingers and the 10/22 is more than enough for anything dog sized or smaller. You can pick one up at most Wal-Marts for under $200.00.

The varmint slayer in question.

I'm not sure there is a good .22lr for varmits....

I was a farm boy and shot a lot of 'chucks and fox with a .22lr. up till age fifteen or so. A good number made it back to their holes even with good shot placement. It sounds rediculous today, but wounded chucks were put out of their misery with a hand Me down Case knife. I read C.S. Landis years later and He loved the .22, but I still remain unconvinced. Any centerfire is a great leap forward............Essex

Good suggestions, all. I'll check out the game laws in NH, but I am pretty sure that you can protect domestic animals, like in VT.

And I KNEW I paid too much for that gun! Oh well, got good buys on others when I wasn't in a hurry to purchase.

I think I would definitely want to have bullet weight, which sounds funny here, of a .22 on those baby's! And a hyper velocity one at that, and as such, I suggest (highly) a .22 over a .17 here.

The Brownings look nice but I don't know much about them.

I'd have to recommend against the 77/22. I have a VBZ, it has sentimental value, and I do like it. It just aint all that great. Things machined off center, really crappy trigger. Questionable barrel mounting method. The trigger/sear are machined way larger than the pins that hold them and have excessive wobble. I got it down to .5" at 50 yards, but that took a lot of effort. You are not getting much value for your money.

$350 is a bit high... this one was under 400 bucks...

Used 10/22 with 3 10 round stock mags and 1 50 rounder ---------- $125.00
Scope mount and rings -------------------------------------------- $25.00
BSA Sweet .22 scope --------------------------------------------- $65.00
Used (someone on THR) GM bull barrel W/ match target chamber ---- $50.00
Boyds thumbhole stock in the rough (Volquartsen) ------------------ $65.00
Bipod (Harris) used from Cabellas "bargain cave" -------------------- $25.00
Sling, and 3 studs, used, from local gunstore ----------------------- $10.00
trigger job, stock fitting/finishing and beddding ------------free, done by me

TOTAL: --------------------------------------------------------- $365.00

add in tax on the taxable items and you're still WELL under the $400.00 mark on a built up custom gun...

Sorry the pics fuzzy, the camera lense was fogging up...

If you can capture that fisher in a decent humane trap, like a Have-a-Heart, I would sure like to have it down here. I would be thrilled to turn it loose on my neighbor's incessantly barking dogs.

Apparently fishers were reintoduced to the area for controlling porcupine population.reguardless of the gun you use,I would suggest placing a trap/s around the areas where it most likely would enter your yard.

Marlin Model 60---WAY more accurate than it has a right to be for a $125 gun (and WAY more accurate than a stock 10/22)---Add an inexpensive scope (mines 3-9x Tasco-$40). With best ammo (Wolf Match Target) I've found (try different kinds--.22s all have a preference) it'll shoot 50 yard 10 shot groups into 1/2" all day long.
