Many moons ago, I thought of myself as a pretty good Maine varmint hunter/shooter, but these days hardly go out into the fields/woods looking primarily for woodchucks, crows, coyotes, red squirrels, etc. I keep a rifle in the "front" closet to take out the occasional critter, mostly coyotes, woodchucks, skunks, or the occasional bird-feeder/bandit crows.

The rifle in the closet these days is most often my .17 HMR, because it's fun/relatively inexpensive to shoot, and fairly quiet, compared with the centerfire .223s and .243s I own. It also insists that I take it with me when I go for long walks on my son's blueberry fields and cut-over woodlands. However, when some larger pests start plaguing the area, one of my .223 bolt-guns gets front-closet duty. I don't own any centerfires that don't shoot sub-MOA, so it usually comes down to the quietest/least valuable...namely, my relatively-new Rem 700 ADL, .223, which also is my favorite walk-about CF.

My son who lives next door hadn't had a centerfire varmint/game rifle, relying on his favorite .30-06 Rem 700 that I gave him about 25 years ago, after owning it for about 15 years or so. It's kinda noisy and overkill (if there is such a thing) around the neighborhood. A few days ago, I long-term loaned him my Tikka .223 bolt-action that flat-out SHOOTS! I still have two others that are lighter and being "Picherized", shoot as well/better. While at it, I also gave him 40 rounds of fresh handloads with 55 grain Sierra spitzers. That should fix him up to make mighty bad days for coyotes inside of 300 yards. The Tikka (photo) is fast to load, having a detachable magazine that slips-in quickly.

I've got this "thing" about unsecured weapons, so I don't leave them around as I don't like the idea of having armed someone that previously wasn't should I interrupt a break in.

My defensive stuff stays in V-Line vaults (3) with the same combo. Currently I do keep a varmint varmint rifle "at the ready", but I keep the magazine loaded and bolt locked up in one of my V-Lines. Kind of like a "Cool Hand Luke" solution. This is a temp fix, because for a long term solution I'm just going swap out an RDS and equip my HD AR15 with a LPVO as the odds of me popping a yote with it are significantly higher than using it for HD.

My current "at the ready" varmint rig is a REM M7 in .223 with HS Precision stock, Timney trigger and Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40 with CDS dial. Right now it's the rifle I shoot the most as it's just fun to practice with:

I admit that I've often taken a handgun downrange to check my targets when nobody else I trust is around. There are houses/businesses within a couple hundred yards, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

I was looking for some kind of bracket or holder for the rifle, before noticing that it was just "posing" for the picture.
I have padded u-bolts welded to the uprights behind the seat. You can see them in the pic if you use your imagination. The cart is mrs farmer's garden/yard buggy.
My Honda ATV has a full two gun commercial gun rack.

I had to put my hand up over my eyes and look through the slits between the fingers and then they were barely visible. ;)

I like the .204 with 32 grain Hornady ammo.
We arent too populated around here, but I'm pretty confident that once that 32grain bullet hits the dirt, its probably done. It's not likely to jump back up and go too far.

I waited until my .22-250 was fully-grown and it did a nice job. It even killed a few of whitetails, though today I have more than one centerfire.
