I am looking into buying a semi-automatic 40 for ccw. I'm looking for opinions on models that people have or have shot that are small enough to carry day in and day out. I'm looking for a size to be a sub compact or compact. I was looking at the Smith and Wessons or Ruger or other options that are reliable. This is not my first gun, I have many others.

Thanks!

I have been carrying a Glock 26 (9mm) for the past few months and like it. The size is great for IWB carry for me and it is a pussycat to shoot.

Recently I picked up a Glock 27 (40 S&W) and am working on making that my carry gun. It has a tad bit more recoil but not enough to cause a problem. I suggest that you look at the G27.

I actually shot a glock g27 today on my way home from work at the range I really liked the way it shot and felt. But still open to other options.

Get a USP Compact if you want a manual safety or prefer the trigger system.

Get a Glock 23 if you don't need a manual safety or want to save a couple hundred bucks.

The Glock 27 may fit your concealment needs better than the Glock 23, but it's not so much smaller that it is (in my opinion) better than the 23.

I suggest checking out the Sig 239 and the Kahr line. Since you are looking at Rugers it appears as if you don't need to be in the super small size range.

sig 239 is about right, but if you have just a little more room, the sig 229 is tough to beat - and is my daily carry piece.

I had a HK compact and now I have a Glock 23. The HK was a larger gun. I really like the Glock. No safety just point and shoot. I figure if i ever have to use it my brain is going to be on overload and the simplier the better.

I regularly carry a sub-compact Springfield XD in .40 S&W. It is comfortable to carry and conceals very well on my body. Give them a look the next time you are at your gun shop.

40 S&W

I am a old 1911 /45 guy who has had his eyes opened by the numbers on the the S&W 40. I own several 45 guns but have recently purchased 4 inch Springfield XD'S in both 40 and 45. I think the 40 will win out in overall
numbers and carrying weight.
I think this is why several branches of our arm forces are looking at this caliber.

Kahr K-40 in a Galco "tuckable" IWB at 4:30 ish.

Works great for me.

But it depends alot on.

Your body Type.

What you do, ie. how active are you, do you spend alot of time in a vehicle, running around etc.

How do you plan on concealing? Shoulder Holster, Pocket carry, IWB, OWB SOB, Crosss Draw

How strict are the limitations on carry in you respective state/ work place.

Here is a little quiz.
Your at work you bend over, showing a recognizable portion of your firearm.

What happens next-

A. You Blush abit and re-conceal. The people around you laugh and regale you with a story about "the not so good ol days when their brand new Colt Mustang fell out while they were bent over picking up eggs at the grocery store".

B. People look at you kinda funny, some nod knowingly, Susan the (often ignored) UMASS grad talks about you at the water cooler with her one or two other moonbat friends.

C. People drop everything, scream and run like crazed howler monkeys, SWAT team repells down the wall and shoots you (because only cops and criminals have guns). Susan (The executive director of manpower) and her two best friends sue the company you work for and/or the manufacture of you chosen arm for mental anguish (and win). On call violence councelors arive and teach the "victims of gun violence" that it's the fault of the NRA, for supporting racist criminals, and shooting cute little bunny rabbits.

Sorry I got a little wordy on the last part.
Hopefully this helps a bit.

HK P2000SK here. It is more controllable and has less recoil than any subcompact .40 I've shot. Reliability and accuracy couldn't be better so far. The trigger (Mine's a DA/SA) is very nice. It's a tad on the thick side, but carries well. As a bonus you can carry a 12-rd USP Compact mag as a spare :)

The XD 40 Sub is nice also, it was on my "short list" but ultimately I decided to spring for the HK.

A friend has a Kahr K40 which is also very nice. She has small hands and it fits her well.

I also was looking at the sw40ve what do you guys think about it? I will be going to the gun store tomorrow. I will look at the guns you guys have mentioned.

i carry a glock model 23 always and a model 27 sometimes. they are both small and light enough for comfortable concealed carry. the 27 is small and light enough for ankle carry. the 23 is actually my alltime favorite handgun. i know it's saying a lot, but it is an extremely veratile piece that can do just about anything you could reasonably ask of a handgun. the only thing it needs to make the perfect carry piece is a good set of tritium sights - i use the xs 24/7 big dot. i don't say this often of firearms but that little glock is about as close to "perfection" as a simple tool made by humans is likely to get. i carry it in a galco summer comfort at about 4 'oclock. i use a bianchi leather clip on single mag pouch for the spare. it holds thirteen rounds and can accept the model 22's fifteen round magazines.

For me the ultimate carry gun (for now at least) turned out to be a Kahr P-40. It`s super slim, very lightweight, has a very smooth/light DAO trigger and shoots like a good full sized gun. I`ve never owned a gun as small and light that would still reliably make good hits at 50yds.+ if needed. I conceal and comfortably carry guns as large/heavy as my S&W 1006 and LAR Grizzly .45Win.Mag. but the Kahr is just effortless, even on the hottest days. Marcus

HK P2000. Great size, great reliability, great features, great feel. Near perfect pistol. If you want to save a few $$$, then go Walther P99 - Great size, great reliability, great features, great feel.
