best 50 cal for the money

i have been wanting one for years and they are not getting any cheaper. i really like the semi auto barretts but i just see no way i could afford one. so i know there are more than a few manufactures out there nowadays. who would you reccomend.
and yes this is my first post i just found y'all by accident and my fun filter here at work didn't block me so all is well. i kind of miss hanging around the gun bunch. i did a lot of uspsa, steel and 3 gun 10/15 years or so ago and i am thinking about getting back in it. i had to back off back then, 3 kids at home and one mad wife when i was gone evey weekend. but my son enjoys shooting and i think it would be great to get him into it.
but i have been lucky enought to keep my uspsa pistols up to date, all 3 are sv's, one 9mm open,one 40 limited and a 9mm commander set up for a silincer if i ever get off my but and send in the paper work to build it.

It'll be good to have you *back into the fold*. I want pictures showing the look on the face of the match coordinator when you show up for an IPSC 3-gun with your Armalite AR-50 as your rifle. :) Seriously, I too would like to know what the esteemed membership thinks is a good value in an affordable (aka single shot) .50...
 
I've been looking for one to buy eventually myself. I want more than one shot though, so semi or bolt with a magazine for me. I'm looking to spend enough money to get it though.

I would like a .50 cal - who knows if they will be avaliable in the future. :(

However - right now I need to concentrate on getting at least one class III...
 
If they ban .50s, then I'm gettin a 14.5 mm JDJ, or a .577 Tyrannasour. The antis are just stupid enough to ban "fifty caliber rifles" precisely - I'm pretty sure that's what Calif did, right?

For the money it's hard to beat the Serbu BFG or Armalite AR-50, there's also the State Arms "Shorty". Any of the so-called "entry" level .50's will serve you well, just stay away from Hesse/Vulcan.
 
I own an McBros/GAP 50BMG, and have shot most of the others...

For any money, the A.L.S. AR15 upper is hard to beat (and it's under $2000). For a dedicated gun under silly money, the Armalite AR-50 is a great deal. It has good ergos, a decent trigger, very mild recoil, and is easy to rebarrel. To get something much better, you need to spend over $10k (ie, the AI-AW50-- I've shot that too).

+1 on the Serbu. I picked up the Serbu BFG-50 a couple of years ago and that is one solid, accurate and dependable 50 BMG. It is a single shot. I would of loved to get the semi auto, but Serbu wasn't offering them at the time. Plus semi autos are priced through the roof. Not sure if they offer a semi auto now or not. Either way, you will be satisfied if you pick one of these up. I believe one of the gun mags rated it #1 over some pretty big names. You can read the article on their web site. I've seen some for sale over on Biggerhammer.net for around $1,800 or so. Good luck
 
lol, yep you do. But looking for the right rifle is half the fun of buying the rifle. All I have to say about owning one is you'd better have a strong shoulder. Oh and by the way. Welcome to the board!
 
I have an AR-50 and haven't regretted the decision. Very accurate so long as good ammo is used. Talon Ball re-man that was culled for under .015 runout shot several 4 inch 600 meter groups on a gusty day.

Trigger is Remington M-700 type and very adjustable. Nice, clean 4lb pull. No creep or overtravel. Heavy 36lb rifle. Bitch to carry around but pleasure to shoot....recoil wise. It kicks about 4 inches and then the muzzlebreak stops it. Stay away from the scope and let it move a little and the thing is a real pussycat. A NOISY pussycat though! VERY concussive muzzleblast that WILL knock the snot out of your sinuses!

Oh, thinking that you want a magazine rifle is, IMO, unnecessary. Lay some rounds beside the rifle and you can load and fire as quickly as you can work the bolt. Plus it is faster for sustained fire because you do not need to change and load mags. Really, rapid fire with the AR-50 is possible and fun....but the fastest I can acquire various targets and hit them is probably 6 seconds per. Semi or magazine gun would not be appreciably faster for me.
 
I've heard great things about the Armalite AR-50. I myself plan to get it's smaller brother--the AR-30. If I went with an affordable bolt-action magazine fed 50, AR-50 would be my choice.
 
My bro is putting together a McMillan action and stock from them (they give a nice military discount. He's having it put together by a custom guy in his AO. He want's it to be as close to possible as the Canadian version that's on record for the longest confirmed shot.

I think I would go with a Barrett or Serbu myself. Just thought I would pitch a different spin though. You could always buy the action, then the stock, then get it put together as the $$ became available.

Anyway you go it should be a good investment and a lot of fun :evil:
 
i bought the serbu BFG-50 2 or 3 years ago. It's an excellent gun, but my experience with Mr. Serbu was appreciably shy of pleasant. I wouldn't do business with him again.

What went wrong? If its something bad that can happen to any of us then it would be helpful if we knew why we should avoid giving him our money.
 
taliv, I'm surprised to hear about your experience with Mr Serbu. I talked to him personally when I had questions pertaining to buying one of his rifles and I found the experience pleasant and informative. If you get a chance post what happened. Maybe he was having a bad day or something. Happens to the best of us.
 
it's been long enough that I don't remember the details of the conversations, so posting my account wouldn't be fair.

i bought the gun when he had a short waiting list, and when he was still going through some changes in the design (like adding the 'shark brake')

i bought it as an x-mas present for my dad, and iirc i ordered it in like mid-november and was originally told to expect it in mid-december.

i don't remember when i got the gun, but it was a month or two late. it was a long series of excuses ("the secretary lost your order", "my machinist is in jail", "i fired my secretary", etc) and every week a promise i'd get it the next week.

now, i totally appreciate the challenges small business owners have and i'd cut them a lot of slack for stuff like the above. but when it's accompanied by a bad attitude, i'll go elsewhere.

if you guys have had good experiences, then I'm glad to hear that.
 
I own a State Arms Rebel model with the laminate wood stock, heavy Walther bull barrel, and extra heavy duty fish gill break. 44 # total package. If I were to buy another at this particular time, the Cobb 50 would be my first choice. Options/price seems like a real deal. www.cobb50.com. Suggested M.S.R.P. is $2995. It is a bolt-action 50 BMG with a detachable 10 round mag. Wish you luck with your endeavor of finding a 50 BMG to fill your needs.

I'd like to get into .50BMG shooting in a year or two, I've looked at some of the upper conversions like the A.L.S. . What I was wondering is how do the AR lowers hold up to the repeated pounding of the .50. I mean bumpfiring a 1,200FPE is one thing. Shooting a 13,000FPE round is quite another.
 
You know, if you really want power, there is something really special about having the semi-auto capacity. I like my 82A1.

A buddy of mine seemed to need to point out that it is not the most accurate of the .50s out there. I knew this. I'll gladly suffer the 1/2-1 moa difference in accuracy for the ability to put more rounds on target.
 
There hasn't been any reported failures of lowers that I've heard of or seen. I know a couple people with the .50 upper/AR lowers and so far all is fine.
 
i hear you, double-naught, and that is a pretty reasonable, middle of the road view. my interest in the cartridge is the two extremes:

full-auto M2 with APIT ammo
or
extreme accuracy, one round at a time

anything between those, and i'd prefer a different cartrige. partially, the reason is that with most other accurate calibers, (e.g. 308win, 223rem, etc) i can put more rounds on target with a semi-auto. with a 50, there's no way i can stay on the gun with that recoil. it's at least a second or two before i can eyeball the scope again. i figure if i'm off anyways, i can work the bolt and it won't cost me anything.
