best 50 cal for the money

Anyone have a Barrett 99 Big Shot? I told my wife the moment they are banned in Illinois, I am robbing the savings account to pick one up. I think she thought I was kidding. ;)

I owned a Barrett M99 briefly. I prefered the Armalite AR-50 to it strongly.

The M99 trigger is Glock-like due to the bullpup design, and I found its muzzle blast much more punishing than any other I've fired.

Honestly, the M82-A1 really is 'it' for me. And it's a great deal even at $7300! (Hey, there's only ONE other semi .50, and since AI has not actually shipped their 'seal .50' rifle to *anyone*, and publically stated that it will not ever be available for civie use, the Barrett wins by default :)

Sure, it's a 1.5-2MOA gun. I've got a bolt .338Lapua (AR-30 actually, great gun) for ultimate accuracy.

But with the ability to deliver just over a FULL POUND OF LEAD on target in less than 10 seconds at 600meters, I can live with that.

AR-50 would be my choice for a bolt-action on a budget. AI's AW .50 at $13grand would be my no-budget choice for a bolt gun :)

Just had the AR-50 out yesterday playing with Bluetips for the first time. FUN! And, I just couldn't resist seeing what a Ball round would do to the creek.

You killed the creek! :D I read that hte AR-50's Thor-like muzzle break is among one of the most efficient designs out there. How's the recoil feel on that thing?

Serbu is supposed to put out a semi-automatic 50BMG shortly called the BFG-50A. They're looking at a target price of 5000 smackers. I'm not sure on the business and pleasantries dealing with their staff as mentioned in an earlier post, but it looks like one of their minimalist designs based off the original BFG-50

Here is a pic of my State Arms 50 BMG. It shoots like a dream putting 750 gr. A-Max bullets down range.

People have a lot of good to say about the BFG-50, but hasn't this 'semi' version been 'coming out' for like 3+ years now?

So yeah, Barrett's still the only one. Maybe not the best design in the world for ultimate accuracy, but, once again, the ONLY one right now! (and as the M107, serving with distinction and rave reviews as we speak.)

Not exactly, there is always the M2 and the Pauza (if you can find one) in semi auto .50's. TNW sells M2's and M3's for about the same cost as an M82, there was a company that started making the Pauza again at a cost of around 9K. Armalite had it on their table at the SHOT show a couple years back, I guess they didn't feel like marketing it.

The Pauza design is very expensive to manufacture. The receiver is machined from a solid chuck of steel. Imagine a SKS on steriods and you have a Pauza.
The fire control group is made the same way. Thats proabaly the main reason they (Armalite) didnt start production. Also all of Robert Pauza's rifles were all hand fit together by him. Other folks have tried to makmufacture the design all had function problems. Its also a heavy rifle - military is looking for lighter designs - all the operators I have talked with all dislike the current issue semi auto because of its weight primarly.

tokarev I like that rifle, very nice.

Out of curiousity, what is the difference from barrel lengths? Longer gives greater range and less muzzle blast, but shorter gives greater accuracy?

Is there some sort of Startrek-like principle with 'harmonic resonance' or something that derives a perfect barrel length?

Whatever the case your rifle is affordable and thus on my wish-list:)

First things first - We never were working on a semi upper - I was involved in another semi auto complete rifle project but not any more.
Barrel lengths - Shorter barrel less recoil (if you have a good brake) more muzzle flash. Longer barrel better for longer distances less muzzle flash more weight to offset recoil. I guess it depends on the type of shooting you will be doing.

I own a State Arms Rebel model with the laminate wood stock, heavy Walther bull barrel, and extra heavy duty fish gill break. 44 # total package. If I were to buy another at this particular time, the Cobb 50 would be my first choice. Options/price seems like a real deal. www.cobb50.com. Suggested M.S.R.P. is $2995. It is a bolt-action 50 BMG with a detachable 10 round mag. Wish you luck with your endeavor of finding a 50 BMG to fill your needs.

Magnuum,

Do you have any experience with the Cobb BA50? I am very interested in one. Info seems scarce at this point. I don't know how many BA50 rifles they've actually delivered at this time, maybe none?

Thanks,
WD
