Best 9mm and training .22 combo?

The guy who started this discussion wasn't concerned about helping his kids/grandkids to get ready for concealed carry.

Read it again, Walt.

My teen girls are ready to start some pistol training. I'd like to start them on .22 to get them used to handling a pistol before moving up to and EDC 9mm. Ideally I would like to have the transition be ergonomically identical.

I did. You can, too.

I know that in many states, concealed carry is possible only with special permits, while every day carry can be much less of a hassle.

I've also never considered EDC (every day carry) to be the same as concealed carry. I quickly reviewed the messages before replying earlier and saw no mention by <SLV> of concealed carry or the need for a smaller, more-concealable CC-appropriate firearm being needed during the training phase. (He's using HIS weapons, and I doubt whether he'd give either of the young ladies he mentioned HIS personal guns when they're sufficiently trained, but he MIGHT buy them something appropriate for their chosen mode of carry

I appreciate all of the suggestions. I think I'm going to pick up a S&W M&P22 Compact. It will be a while until they are ready to shoot a compact 9mm auto. The S&W will give them the feel for it without the recoil.

Late to the game, but I think you made a good choice. I bought an M&P 22 Compact recently myself. While it is not identical, it is probably about as close as you can get without being a true 22 "clone" or a conversion kit. I bought my 22 for cheap practice and for introducing new people to shooting with something that "feels" like the 9's that I own.

I think the M&P 22 is a great choice as well. I don’t think conversion kits are a very good option.

I have a 1911 kit. It runs well but what you end up with is a 22 that is bigger and heavier than it

needs to be. I think it’s more important that you have something for them to shoot that’s fun.

If they are not having fun, what’s the point. The conversion sits in the safe. The 22/45 light gets the

love. Easy to shoot. More importantly, fun to shoot.

I was going to suggest the M&P22. I have shot one and the only problem was finding enough .22 ammo to keep shooting all day. If you are looking for a pair of similar/same guns that is a good choice too. You can buy a full size M&P in 9mm when the young ladies are ready to move up and nothing will be strange to them. I'm sure they are smart enough to figure out two different guns when need be but if you think that's best, dad knows best...

I picked up the M&P .22 compact a couple weeks ago for training and fun. It's great! I wanted something in the same platform as my other pistols for cheaper range time and something that was easier for introducing new shooters to handguns. It fit the bill. Took the girlfriend to the range with it (after she memorized and recited the 4 safety rules) and she did fantastic. It fed flawlessly and I had fun putting rounds in tiny little groups.

My suggestions follows another poster: 1911 in 9mm + Marvel conversion kit.

maybe the Chiappa 1911 .22.

Worst POS gun I've ever owned. Don't buy it unless you want a tool for live fire practice clearing stoppages. Mine would rarely go through a full mag without stoppage, typically a "stovepipe". Sent it back to Chiappa (I had to pay shipping) and it came back even worse.

A coworker ordered a Walther PPQ M2 9mm and Walther PPQ SD .22 Tactical through my FFL last week. He bought them up to the house last Friday and we shot about 100 rounds through each with an ELEMENT 2 on the .22. I can't imagine a better setup for training and CC. We didn't have any issues except the CCI QUIET-22 that wouldn't cycle either the Walther or my S&W M&P 15-22, but we expected that. This was my first experience with a PPQ and the 9mm is one of the best I've ever handled and shot. I have a SIG P320 TACOPS Carry on order and I hope I like it as much as the Walther.
